A day of glorious, delicious food in my pregnant life :)

  1. You continue to inspire me. If you can eat so well while pregnant surely the rest of us can eat well. =)

  2. Maybe I'll have to try that green juice recipe. Today I made one and it isn't quite palatable for me. I'm not sure what to do with it. But I'm proud of myself for finally using my juicer. I got it a few days ago and I was nervous to use it because there weren't very good instructions that came with it. Turns out it is just super easy to use so no wonder!

  3. Kristen, I thought of you the other day as I was frantically trying to prep raw foods. My 2.5 y/o was down for a nap, and my 3 m/o was in a baby carrier. The baby started crying. I was so focused on trying to quickly finish shredding the cabbage for sauerkraut that I inadvertently shredded it way too fine!! I thankfully had just made some raw pumpkin seed dressing that I decided work work well as a cole slaw. I thought, "I wonder how Kristen will make sure to get enough raw food in during her postpartum period" :)

I'll look forward to any tips you have! Does your husband work from home? That would certainly make things a bit easier, as I can only chop so many veggies with a 2.5 y/o who wants to play all the time and a 3 m/o who wants to nurse a lot!

  4. Kristen - what do plan on doing to keep up milk production? I found that i needed to go back to a high carb hi protein standard but healthy diet. There isn't much time to cook either when bfing!

  5. Lots of breastfeeding on demand - lol!

Haven't thought about that yet and don't plan to until I get into breastfeeding. My midwife and doula don't think my diet will affect it. Plenty of vegan women successfully breastfeed so I should be good to go. Every woman is different. If I need more protein or carbs, I can easily get that through my plant-based diet. :) I'm also not worried about my schedule with food prep. Got that taken care of. ;)

  6. LOL, every time that blond woman pops up on your site, I think "Who is that? And what's she doing on Kristen's Raw?"

Just wanted to let you know, after considering your Vegan Protein Powders Review, I went ahead and ordered some Garden of Life. I've been really happy with that brand's vitamins — in fact, the Vitamin Code bottle I won on your blog — that I felt comfortable trying theirs out first. I'll let you know what I think after I give it whirl.

    Thanks again!

  8. I have a question about Chia seeds. Do you have to grind them like you do Flax?
I just bought some and have put them in smoothies, but nothing else yet.
    Thanks so much!

PS So enjoying your pregnancy journal!

  11. Hi Kristen,

This is kind of off-topic, but I was wondering if you're still doing the fermented veggies/sauerkraut and if so, do you still use your fermenting pot?

My husband & I are thinking of getting one and I just wanted your opinion after you've had it for a year or so.

Thanks so much for all your motivating posts!!

  14. Hi Brenna Kater,
Yes, my husband works from home, too, so that is going to make everything much easier. :) I also plan to have stuff frozen (dressings, soups, fruit for smoothies, etc). And, my mom will stop by to help prep food for the week. :)

  15. I love that you post these, it's super helpful when mapping out a healthy day to look at what the healthiest people you know are eating, whether pregnant or not!

I've been meaning to ask you what kind of water you use? I have a filter, and buy spring water on occasion so I'm getting some minerals and no chlorine, but it's one of those things I still don't feel is perfect.

  16. What a delicious menu! I'll have to try that juice...love cilantro!
I think you will do fine with nursing and food stuff....it sounds like you have a good plan and help....it really wasn't too hard to nurse and be in the kitchen with my youngest son...and when he was born his brothers were 3 1/2 (different with the twins though, difficult pregnancy and recovery, but all ok!)...I made about 20 family sized meals and froze them and stocked up good. I had a wonderful pregnancy and quick recovery from c-section. I love being in the kitchen and it was within a month that I was back and my son was either nursing or asleep...I had him in a bouncy seat in the kitchen with me...sure there were a few times his needs interrupted food preparing, but I timed it so my time in the kitchen was after he nursed so he was asleep or content to watch me!...as he got older,he was still in the kitchen in his bouncy seat or playing near me when I was in the kitchen doing food prep. Now he helps as do his brothers...It seems like we fell back on our quick staples...I imagine you will do the same and smoothies and such are quick to whip up. It was really the first few weeks that were the hardest...just being tired and feeling the horomonal shift, in total awe of birth and my new son and juggling family needs...luckily my older sons weren't in school yet so we had a nice, easy unstructured schedule. You'll do fine because Raw foods and Vegan foods are your forte...It think your milk supply will be fine, the main thing is to nurse whenever your babe is awake that first month or so....supply=demand....you'll find a new rhythm to your days, but will fall back on the familiar in terms of foods....Blessings...Deb in MI

  18. Kristen- I know that we don't know each other, but I love your blog! We've recently transitioned to a vegan diet, and we're trying to be highly raw. That said, we were raised on the typical American diet, and we're actively trying to get pregnant... do you have any advice on what kind of diet we should be following? I am nervous about being vegan, and highly raw while trying to grow another life. I commend you for your lifestyle, (it is such an inspiration to us!) but the reason I am worried for us is that we haven't been vegan for very long, and our bodies aren't in the most perfect condition yet. I don't want to jeopardize the health/safety of an unborn baby because our bodies weren't in their best condition. Does that make any sense even? Sorry- I really don't mean to bother you- or anyone else- I am just hoping for some advice from someone who has been there and who is there now. :)

  20. Hi Rachel! just my quick thoughts: maybe try to keep adding in good healthy choices; green smoothies, raw and steamed veggies with only a touch of sea salt added....salads with homemade dressings, fruits for snacks, whole grains, beans, tofu etc....start replacing unhealthy meals with healthy ones..I love Kristens info for Raw...for cooked vegan, I use Nava Atlas 'The Vegetarian Family Cookbook' a lot....I think you can only enhance your and your family's and baby's health by adding in the good stuff while deleting the unhealthy stuff...make sure to keep it well rounded, have a good stocked kitchen, don't deprive or go hungry and you will do fine...just my 2 cents.....Deb again!

  21. Hi Rachel,

One thing you want to be careful of is detoxing while trying to conceive and while pregnant or breastfeeding. So, instead of making a dramatic change, I'd make small baby steps. Start eating organic foods. Add greens to your diet with smoothies and salads. Add fresh fruits. Add other cooked vegan foods. I wouldn't do it all overnight... rather take your time and make changes as the weeks go by so it's a nice slow transition. Take out crap foods like trans fats, alcohol, processed sugars, etc.

While you're at it, educate yourself on a vegan diet and where you'll get your various nutrients for a growing baby. For example, you'll want DHA, B12, iron, calcium, vitamins, fiber, etc. You can get some ideas from Skinny Bitch's book "Bun in the Oven" as well.

I would also start looking for your midwife (or physician - whichever you choose to go with) and doula. I looked for mine before we started trying to conceive because I wanted that part taken care of. Plus, I used their expertise while trying to conceive and during those first few weeks of pregnancy (and obviously beyond) they were very helpful, too.

    Good luck,
    Kristen

  22. Kristen,
You officially got me hooked on Himalayan crystal salt. Love it. My fiance calls it "girl salt." He can't get past the pink! Side note: I am officially buying the Hurom juicer next week! After my fab journey into veganism, I am so excited to enter the world of plant blood!!!

  23. Looks good. I was surprised to find that my appetite increased from when I was pregnant to now that I'm am breastfeeding. I wonder if you'll experience the same thing.

  26. I bet you will be fine with the nursing. I've nursed while pregnant and vegan, and had two vegan pregnancies. All will be well. I was hungrier as a nursing mom than pregnant also. You're so organized with planning ahead too! Thanks so much for keeping us posted and giving us an idea of your food intake, it's inspirational and helpful. I appreicate it! Mary

  27. (midwife Q)

Hello! After seeing the Cherry Bomb shake takeover the blogworld, I had to go to the source. I think your blog is amazing and so informative.

I am vegan, and nearing the time in my life when my husband and I will be ready to expand my family. I would LOVE to find a midwife who understands the vegan lifestyle and will be supportive... Is there any chance there is a network of midwives connected with the woman you work with? I am in Jersey and am not sure where to begin.

Please email me if you can help in any way... I tried to email you but could not find an address and could not link to the tab from your profile (restrictions b/c this is my work computer on my home network). Thanks. Congratulations on your little one. And I'm grateful I found your site. casey4298@gmail.com

  28. Hi Autumn,

I would start with searching for midwives online (Google) in your area. That's how I found mine, and of the two I interviewed... they both supported my diet choices. Midwives tend to be veg-friendly from my research.

Thank you for checking out my blog and leaving me a comment. My email address is available on my main website http://KristensRaw.com :)

    Cheers,
    Kristen

PS GOOD LUCK WITH BABY MAKING!
