When the pain first started, I figured I'd kind of ignore it as long as I could. It wasn't debilitating, just annoying and a little painful when I bite. However, in passing, I let my midwife know and she was actually concerned. She said it could mean infection, and that could be harmful for the baby. Sh*t. Well, since it was the weekend when it started, I couldn't see my dentist. So to help ease the pain, she taught me a little acupressure trick for pressing on a certain spot on my jaw. It worked to temporarily relieve the pain. :) I explained my concerns of going to the dentist while pregnant, and she relaxed my fears of potentially having to get an x-ray as she described to me the kind of equipment I'd want to make sure my dentist was using (digital) and to have him double up the cover-thing on me. Furthermore, according to a doctor I know, these x-rays (and being properly covered up), is less radiation than taking an airplane flight. As for my concern of having novacaine, I was told that there is a formulation for pregnant women that doesn't have epiniphrine in it. Frankly, that doesn't make me feel much better... I don't want any drugs if I can help it. Hhmmm... I wonder if I can Hypnobirth my way through any potential dental work - nervously lol.
When Monday rolled around, I dragged myself to the dentist to get more information. Turns out that I have already had a root canal in that tooth and his initial diagnosis was that it was an abscessed tooth. Double Sh*t! He needed an x-ray to verify it, but I was still leery about getting one. My research about x-rays also said that it's better to wait until later in the pregnancy for them if possible, third trimester being the safest. After a lengthy discussion he said that since the pain only just started a few days prior, and that because it wasn't hurting that much... I could wait a bit and see if it gets worse, or if in the small case that it's not an abscess, perhaps it'll go away on its own. (There was talk about whether I was grinding my teeth which could cause the pain. Very unlikely that I'm a teeth grinder though.) The consensus was that if it was indeed abscessed, it could be dangerous based on the level of the infection, but that I could take some time to think about how I want to proceed and see if it gets better or worse over the following week or two.
So, I went home and started a few natural remedies. For the next few days I swished 3 times a day with warmed Himalayan crystal salt water in my mouth.
Then, I swished with 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide (I buy the strong concentration - about 35% - and then dilute it in a 1:11 ratio of 1 part peroxide to 11 parts water). I did this about 3 times a day, too.
I also did two other things: took extra probiotics and extra wheat grass tablets.
Good news so far! On Tuesday I only had mild discomfort in the morning when waking, which went away after a couple of hours. On Wednesday the only teeny tiny amount of sensation I felt was for about 30 minutes after I woke up from my mid-day nap. And, today, I'm pain free still. Even though I'm sure I don't grind my teeth, I am consistently sleeping on my left side, which is recommended for pregnant women. I wonder if this is increasing the pressure on that side of my jaw which is where the tooth problem is.
Update: I've been asked a number of times about the toothpaste that I use. Traditionally, I don't stick with any one, but there are a few things that I rotate.
1) Miessence
This was sent to me to sample a couple of weeks back and I LOVE it. I have both the lemon and the mint flavors and, right now, it's my favorite toothpaste. It's very simple in flavor and experience, and you can sense the baking soda in it which some people might not like as much, but there is just something about it that I LOOOOVE! It's not cheap, but I plan on buying more when I run out. You can check out the details here
2)JASON
There are a few flavors (citrus, mint, and I think anise?) that Jason puts out which are: Fluoride Free, with baking soda, and known as their premium toothpaste. The one I use is Spearmint with Baking Soda Premium Toothpaste (that's the actual title) and I buy it at Whole Foods. It seems quite inoffensive regarding ingredients. I was using this more often before I received the Miessence samples, but plan on using the Miessence more now. The weird thing is that even on Jason's website, I don't see this particular variety listed.
3) Baking Soda
Sometimes I brush with plain ol' baking soda.
4) 3% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Sometimes I gently brush with just this by itself. I think I read somewhere years ago that if you have mercury amalgams you shouldn't use this... so you might want to check that out if you're interested in using this for your teeth.
5) Baking Soda with 3% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide Paste
Sometimes I make a little paste out of these two and use it to brush my teeth.
Bless your heart! What a thing to go through. I applaud you for taking your time with this and doing all that you can to treat it naturally and safely. It's great too, that you have medical professionals who are willing to work with you.

I was sorry to see this post end, what a cliffhanger! Thanks for sharing this story and I hope everything goes well with your tooth; feel better!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your toothache. I, too, have had that problem recently and had much success using an activated charcoal poultice. I blend the charcoal with water to make a paste, place it between layers of cheesecloth, and pack it between my tooth and cheek. The charcoal pulls any infection out and helps relieve the pain. Just discard the poultice after a couple hours. Repeat as needed. Safe for baby too! BTW, I just found your blog and I love it already! Thanks for all your great info!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the love!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is no fun- that is for sure. We'll get you through this.

oh i'm so sorry. tooth pain is some of the worst! plus it interferes with food eating--double bummer.
ReplyDeleteyou are such a good mom already for caring so much about the affect on the baby. kudos.
Sorry about your toothache. But, It's so nice to hear that you don't succumb to the knee-jerk tendency to blindly heed the protocol of physicians. This story (tale of woe) inspires me to do the same.
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely be praying for you during this and sending good thoughts your way. I'm so glad to hear that the pain has lessened. Tooth pain is not fun (as if any pain is, but you get my drift :)
ReplyDeleteOne way to help stay strong when in a doctor's office is to bring someone with you who knows your values and desires. This person can help stand up for what you want, or simply give you a gentle reminder that it's OK to take a day to "think about it."
ReplyDeletekristen, lots of people are bruxers ... it's just a little neurological quirk that is very common ... i dunno if there are natural cures for it, but i do know that clenching can fracture back teeth ... anyway, a night guard made by the dentist can prevent any tooth damage from grinding/clenching (the kind called an NTI that only fits over the front teeth are the best imo ... and no x-ray is needed) ... xoxo
ReplyDeleteI hope your remedies continue to battle your tooth pain! I hate having tooth pain, it is so uncomfortable! Glad you stood up for yourself and didn't give into the xray right away!
ReplyDeleteI hope you feel better soon without another dentist visit! {{HUG}}
ReplyDeleteNo fun, no fun at all! The only struggle I had when pregnant was an ear ache that I believe came from always sleeping from one side all night long. But I guess if that happened to everyone then you'd hear about it more often. But if I ever slept on the right side instead of left then my ear pain would decrease. It was kind of strange.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of teeth- what kind of toothpaste do you use? We've been using Tom's but I find that it still has a lot of the nasty ingredients that I've been trying to avoid. Last time I was at whole foods, I picked up a new kind but it was so nasty tasting that I threw it out immediately! Help! We are out!
This is so helpful! I just got my first filling since I was literally 8 years old. Supposedly, it was bigger than they thought once they got in there, so she said I might be sore for a little. Well, a month and a half later, I can still feel it sometimes. Thank you for this!
ReplyDeleteI updated the post to reflect what I use to clean my teeth. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa,
ReplyDelete~My dentist said I do not show signs of grinding.
~My husband has watched me sleep many nights and said I do not grind.
Thanks for the info though!
Wow,
ReplyDeleteGreat job with your natural remedies! I'm leery of x-rays too!
I went to Whole Foods this afternoon to look for Vitamin Code's Raw Prenatal. I couldnt find it but noticed that WF carried many other VC products. I spoke to someone who worked there and she said that all vegan products containing D3 were pulled to ensure that they were truly vegan. So...I came home and did some research and found that others were told the same thing as I was. D3 is derived from lanolin! Have you heard anything like this?
WF did have the New Chapter Prenatals...however, I wanted to do some more research before I purchased anything!
What are your thoughts? any help would be much appreciated! Hope yor toothache is gone!
So sorry to hear about your tooth pain, I also agree that tooth pain is the Worst!!!!! I was trying different toothpastes for a while but decided to try toothsoap and I have to say I AM HOOKED, I love it! Checkout toothsoap.com, I was able to buy it at my local healthfood store. I bought the shreds (peppermint), it costs approx $20 but if you use 2-3 a day it may last a few months (there are lots of shreds in there, too many to count!) :-)
ReplyDeleteHi AMJ217,
ReplyDeleteThere is a discussion about VC's "vegan-ish" D3 (according to them it passes Vegan Society's vegan definition I guess) in the comments of this thread.

Kristen, sorry to hear about the dental pain. I hope the remedies you are using heal whatever is causing it. Knowing how diligent you are in your research for what-ifs, do you know about Dr. Nunnally in TX? I learned about him on Patrick Timpone's www.oneradionetwork.com (free subscription; thanks Anthony the Raw Model for turning me onto this great resource!). Patrick had to have significant dental work last year - cavitations from old root canals, removing mercury fillings, etc. - and Dr. Nunnally is his dentist. You can listen to an interview of Dr. N by Patrick in the archives. Dr. N's Web site is www.healthysmilesforlife.com/info/about, and I think Patrick has said Dr. N has taught other dentists his special techniques, so perhaps there is one hear you.
ReplyDeleteSending you and your special baby waves of healing.

I hate having toothache, chew some natural raw onions, it helps a lot knowing the antibiotics in the onion help soothe pain. Also some salt water or apply crushed pain reliever directly to the tooth, within minutes should be ok.
ReplyDeleteBeen a while, stay blessed.
Kristen I couldn't believe my eyes as i read this...i've been having an ache on the left side of my mouth too, not sure if its my tooth, it feels more like just my jaw or something, plus my sinus has been draining really badly...i'm preggy too, 15 weeks and i didn't know what to do, but i think i'll try that salt water thing!!! when i read i was like seriously!? when i read about that abscess part tho i got scared...i'm gonna have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteOh no's! Hope you can keep it at bay! This post took me back ... just a year ago I had the same problem. Found out a tooth needed a root canal at 6 months pregnant. Didn't want to have any x-rays either but ended up being doubled bibbed for one. I also had to wait to do the procedure until after the birth as required by the Dr. and my tooth worsened and it caused excruciating pain... don't mean to scare you but it was horrible. I used clove oil by adding a few drops on a cotton ball/Q/tip and bit down on it. Works wonders. I think clove oil is a contraindication though during pregnancy :( Not sure you've heard about oil pulling but I did some of that too and it helped a lot also. Hang in there and do what ya gotta do! I know how you feel. Sending positive tooth preggo vibes your way! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my word honey - I was in the middle of a great cleanse once and suddenly had to have a cavity filled ... well my dentist thought I was crazy...but I asked for the procedure with zero pain meds.
ReplyDeleteAfter a minute, he hit a nerve and I quickly changed my mind!! lol. He ended up giving me a half-dose and all was great. :) I feel for you chica!!
