Midwife Visit - All Is Great With Pregnancy

(Happy mama at almost 6 months) This week we had our monthly visit with our amazing midwife, Shell (see why we are choosing a midwife / homebirth here). Everything is going wonderfully. My weight gain is healthy (weighed in around 145 today), my urine analysis is pristine, my blood pressure is low and healthy, and overall, I feel great. Shell mentioned that I don't seem to have some of the issues many pregnant women seem to experience (swollen extremities for example). I attribute it to my healthy lifestyle.

We've declined the use of any more ultrasounds since the last one we had around 13.5 weeks, and we're not going to use doppler either (I just don't completely trust either of those, and unless it's warranted for something that could be actionable, then I see no reason to use them). We're going old school and using a fetascope which can be tricky to use in hearing the heartbeat unless you have a practiced person doing it. I bought one on Amazon to use myself, but I've yet to find the heartbeat in my attempts. Shell heard our baby's heartbeat today and it is normal. :)

She also gave me some magic pregnancy tea. I call it magic because anything this woman makes or does is magical for my baby. She's just so awesome. My instructions are to drink a quart a day. Yum! I can't wait!

After our appointment, we went to one of my favorite places for lunch, Chakra 4 Herbs. They are organic and have many raw and vegan dishes. I always get a bowl of their (cooked) soup because it's the best soup in the whole world. Truly. And, then I usually get one of their giant organic wraps that is stuffed with greens, veggies, olives, and raw vegan cheese. On our way out I noticed they had a "breastfeeding friendly" sticker on the door so I had to take a picture of it. They rock!

  4. Fetoscopes r the bomb! Really, there's no use for anything else in a healthy pregnancy. Sometimes Dad can even put his ear to your belly & hear the heartbeat!!!(depends on monkey position, gestation etc.)
cheers to you three! : ))))))

  9. This is the most amazing toothpaste ever: http://www.organicteatreeoil.com/

Have you also looked into Young Living Essential Oils? I used them all throughout my pregnancy. The Gentle Baby is amazing. They are great for all types of remedies. I would recommend getting their Essential Oil book. I use the oils for constipation, ear ache, fever, teething for my baby. I can't believe how well they work on me and her.

Have you also considered the Young Living Oils? I used them throughout my entire pregnancy and on my baby. The Gentle Baby is amazing. I had a lady do essential oils on me all the while I was in labor. I could not believe by rubbing peppermint oil on my babies feet it would reduce her fever or oils around her ear to relieve an earache. The oils are amazing!

  20. You are so cute. I think I have those same maternity pants (I really still have them).

I also noticed that I didn't swell as much this time around. I did in the beginning, when I fell off the raw wagon. But, in the summer (when you'd think I'd swell the most), I ate fresher foods and it all went away. I didn't gain any weight the whole last trimester either, but Hayden sure did, although not more than the average baby (she came out at 6 lbs. 11 ounces).

Good luck in the next few months. You are glowing :-)

  24. You look fantastic! We opted to use the fetoscope instead of the doppler, and didn't have ultrasounds either. Our midwife was able to hear our son's heartbeat and said it was great, but my husband and I were only able to hear it a couple times - I think the fetoscope requires practice!

  27. thanks for the comment on my blog today, congrats on your new baby, it is simply wonderful. I love your blog, it is so informative! I just read you last post and hope to bring you some comfort by saying I worked as a dental assistant during my entire first pregnancy and my sweet baby is as healthy as can be. If I had to guess I would even guess maybe the tooth is cracked? that would cause pain only sometimes. . .and your dr. is so right about the radiation of one dental x ray being hardly anything at all. good luck, I hope the pain diminishes.

  28. I know! Those fetascopes are tricky. We couldn't find the heartbeat (of #3) for a few weeks, but we weren't nervous since the little bugger was moving around so much. I am due May 1st.
LOVE the breastfeeding friendly sticker. Best wishes for a happy healthy birth.xo

  33. I think I only heard the baby's heartbeat once through a fetascope. I just trusted my midwife when she said she heard it :)

  34. you look adorable! you may have already addressed this but... will you remain brunette after the pregnancy? i love it!

  35. My brunette hair is for my health AND the environment, not just for the baby. Brunette will stay. :)

    Love you xx

  38. Congratulations! We had a home birth as well. You will love it. Tip for the fetoscope. We could always find the heartbeat if we placed it low under my belly. Close to my pubic bone.

  39. Yay that's where you took me for a soup and a yummy wrap. Still dreaming of it now!
