How many of you have heard it before (especially from men)... BUT, WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR PROTEIN WITH THAT DIET?
Or... perhaps the #1 thing that deters men from trying a vegan diet: "I'M AFRAID I'LL LOSE MY MUSCLE."
Or... MY TRAINER DOESN'T BELIEVE IT'S POSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN OR GROW MY MUSCLE ON A VEGAN DIET - LET ALONE A DIET THAT IS HIGH IN RAW FOODS!
Well, let me tell you... YES, it can be done. My husband is living proof! Muscle isn't reserved for only the meat-heads! Just look around in nature and see the massive strength in herbivorous animals such as horses, gorillas, buffalo, elephants, hippopotamus, and more. News Flash to the Doubting Omnivores.... yes, you can build muscle with the proper plant based foods and some work in the gym. Let me take a step further. I'm not just referring to a vegan diet with cooked proteins; this can be done with a High Raw (or All Raw), All Vegan diet. You don't see elephants and horses grilling up their leaves or sauteeing their twigs, right?
So... how can it be done?
Well, let me share with you some details about my husband and his experience. My husband follows along with my Raw Vegan diet. However, he wasn't always a vegan, let alone a Raw Vegan (read about our beginnings here in my post To Date or Not to Date a Carnivore). But, he is now. His answer when people ask about the way he eats and whether he misses meat, "Are you kidding? My wife is a Raw Vegan chef. I live like a movie star... I look up from my computer when I'm working, and there is a plate full of amazing food! We want to live long healthy lives together, and this is the way to do it."

Enter: Raw Vegan "Protein Grenades." What are Raw Vegan Protein Grenades? They are mini glass mason filled jars filled with one pre-mixed shake's worth of Raw Vegan protein powders. Just dump into a shaker cup, add water, and shake!
Well, let me share with you some details about my husband and his experience. My husband follows along with my Raw Vegan diet. However, he wasn't always a vegan, let alone a Raw Vegan (read about our beginnings here in my post To Date or Not to Date a Carnivore). But, he is now. I look up from my computer when I'm working, and there is a plate full of amazing food! We want to live long healthy lives together, and this is the way to do it."
But it took some convincing initially. When my husband first started looking into the plant-based diet with me, he did his own research (he's very sciency). He did his own reading, not only into the health aspects of raw and vegan food, but he also seriously questioned whether he'd be able to maintain his muscle mass and strength on this diet. And not just maintain it, but actually he wanted to get bigger and stronger, despite being 38 at the time. It had always been hard for him to put on muscle. Prior to meeting me, through trial and error, he had figured out that, for his ectomorphic body type, he needed a lot of protein to add mass which he derived almost exclusively from whey protein shakes. So I promised him we'd make it happen, one way or another - Raw Vegan style. If he needed protein, I'd give him protein. Only now he would be consuming clean, efficient, non-cancer-promoting protein. None of that nasty, acidic animal based protein that burns dirty and can make you tired... not to mention, ehem... unhealthy! Suffice it to say, he was excited... but with so few role models, understandably skeptical.
The verdict? Plants work!! His strength has increased, and he can maintain (or gain mass) based on his diet and workout routine. In fact, after an involuntary hiatus brought on by a shoulder injury, he is now bench-pressing his lifetime personal best, using only plants as food!

So, how does he do it specifically? What has been working for him? It's a pretty simple formula that works for him. Dedication. Working out. Extra protein. He strength trains about 5 days a week. And... he's in awesome shape. See?
When researching vegan proteins, I came across some excellent information in Brendan Brazier's book, Thrive. In it, he describes how to get an optimal ratio of essential amino acids from plant sources. Specifically, a mixture of hemp protein, brown rice protein, and pea protein. Through the Vega product line, Brendan sells a protein powder blend that consisted of those proteins. Unfortunately, we didn't care for the taste of it. So I researched ways to make my own custom mixture of proteins using Brendan's ideas to get me started.
Each Grenade is pre-mixed to contain an optimal amino acid profile -- all from plant-based proteins. The recipe varies slightly from week to week, because I like to change it up. Some of the different elements are included in the photo below, so you can get an idea of the goodies involved. Because there are some days when my husband drinks anywhere from 2 to 5 of these shakes (depending on what we're doing, eating, or his workout routine and goals), I vary the ingredients accordingly. For example, if he is loading up and drinks 4-5 shakes in a day, then the amount of green powder and fruit powder will be about 1 teaspoon per Grenade. But if he only drinks 1-2 per day, then I increase the green powder and fruit powder in each one, so he ends up getting roughly the same amount of super mega phytonutrients. (I always make sure he gets a hellalotta nutrients in addition to protein.)
Different Amounts For Different Goals: During periods when my husband is doing intense training and really getting lean, it can be common for him to drink up to 4-5 Raw Vegan Protein Grenades daily plus he'll eat one meal, usually a huge organic salad loaded with veggies alongside a cooked vegan protein (beans, lentils, soy, or Gardein), or sometimes it's an all Raw vegan dinner like lasagna, tacos, or zucchini pasta marinara. When gaining strength or mass isn't his goal... meaning that he is in a maintenance phase without the intense training schedule, then he usually drinks 1-2 Protein Grenades a day, and eats about 2 meals which are moderate to high raw, plus snacks as he desires (some examples of snacks he likes: fresh green juice, green smoothies, sprouted pumpkin or sunflower seeds, sprouts, raisins, hemp seeds, prunes, fruit, etc). And, of course, there are some days where he skips the Grenades altogether, and his diet is filled with delicious raw and vegan whole foods. It varies based on his goals at the time, but the bottom line is that because of this super easy Grenade innovation, he can be very flexible yet consistently get plenty of protein - Raw and Vegan style.

The Assembly Line: To make life easy on myself, I make up a bunch of Raw Vegan Protein Grenades every few days. I do it in an assembly line fashion. It's actually fun. If my husband has meetings outside of the home for the day, then he takes a bag of Grenades along with a shaker bottle and water, and he's all set. Each Protein Grenade has roughly 40-45 grams of pure, raw, vegan, potent protein. If you consider that raw vegan protein is assimilated better than cooked protein, then you can imagine how powerful these grenades really are.
Here are the staples included in each Raw Vegan Protein Grenade:
- Sun Warrior's Raw Sprouted Brown Rice Protein (about 2 scoops) or now that we're trying Garden of Life's RAW Protein, he gets 1 scoop of Sun Warrior and 1 scoop of GofL's RAW Protein (I like the different ingredients in GofL's blend). We're still in the experimenting phase with Garden of Life's RAW Protein, but it's likely that we'll rotate it in periodically.
- Vitamineral Green Powder (1-3 teaspoons) - or sometimes we use Amazing Grass' Wheat Grass Powder or their Chocolate Green Superfood (Update! I'm now also using Sun Warrior's Ormus SuperGreens!)
- Fruits of the Earth (1-3 teaspoons) - sometimes we use Navitas Naturals Twister Power Superfruit or their Raw Pomegranate Powder
- 1T hemp protein powder, 1T pea protein powder, or (usually) 1/2-1T of both. Note about the pea protein - I'm not sure how "raw" it is or perhaps there are sprouted pea proteins out there. I'm currently using the organic pea protein from Mercola's website.
- And, sometimes I add ground flax seeds.
- I also like to play with it at times and add cinnamon, nutmeg, mesquite powder, maca, lucuma powder, or raw chocolate powder. Fun and this includes lots of other great nutrients!
- UPDATE: I was sent a sample of Sprout Living's EPIC Protein (sprouted brown rice protein) that is CERTIFIED ORGANIC. I like it!
Have you had people ask you about the protein when you eat Raw or Vegan? Or perhaps you have a loved one who is interested in your diet, but is afraid of losing muscle or "getting skinny"? Share your tales!
Um..THAT is your your husband? Wow...just....wow.
ReplyDelete:)
Kristen, I LOVE this post!! Due to decisions that we've made as a couple, my fiance is primarily following a vegetarian diet these days. In the past, he was eating mostly packaged foods (poison!) and meat. Now, he eats cooked lentils and beans, steamed veggies, green drinks, and a smattering of organic poultry here and there.
ReplyDeleteIn the midst of our food changes, he is also going through his Black Belt Cycle in martial arts. He works out for about 2 hours per day, 5-6 days per week. He loves it, but he has lost a lot of weight and muscle mass. He doesn't feel weak, he just feels like he's not performing to the best of his ability due to the lack of mass. It seems like he has a similar build to your hubby-tall with a tendency to be thin.
SO...thank you thank you!! I'm going to make him some grenades and get him back in optimum shape! =)
Hey Kristen,
ReplyDeleteI am definitely sending this to my hubby. He uses Whey and Egg White protein.. BLECH!!!!! So gross, anyway, we argue about this all the time. He lifts weights and thinks they are the only things that work. I hope your posts helps him see the light! HUGS! XO
Hey Kristen,
ReplyDeleteA little P.S. What would you suggest men to do leading up to TTC? I am sure your had your hubby on the right stuff, I want to do what I can with mine. He eats what I eat (except when away from home, and sometimes chicken, turkey or ham..yuck), but what about supplements and other things? You are the queen of clean pregnancy! :) Love ya!
I think my husband has the same concern although he is a skinny/lanky type. He has lost weight since I started eating/feeding him this way. I told him that maybe if he lifted weights once in a while that it would help. I love your protein grenade idea, that is simply fabulous!
ReplyDeletePeople ask all the time Kristen! And some even tell me that I am not getting enough protein. I cannot blame them though. As a former Body for Life follower and Zone dieter, we are programmed since birth to think we need alot of protein in our daily diet.
ReplyDeleteI always tell them HEMP! Hemp seeds and hemp protein powder. ALso according to Dr Furhman (Eat to Live) you are getting enough protein in a plant-based diet.
What a great post and I love the protein grenades in the cute little mason jars!
Kristen, awesome post. Interestingly the last of my two newsletters were on the sugject of protein as well. Perfect timing, and SO helpful.
ReplyDeleteI will make sure to bookmark this post and now I am off to twitter it.
Thanks!
Cody and I both went vegan together several years ago out of our passion for animal rights. We've both been eating more and more raw foods because we also love to be healthy!
ReplyDeleteCody is really lanky and skinny, but lately he has mentioned wanting to start weight lifting. He is already into running which keeps him fit cardio wise, so it will be nice to change it up.
And can I say....that is your husband in that picture? Whoa.....
I know, right(?), part of me can't believe that I posted that picture of him.. being the sometimes jealous woman that I can be. ;) But, I really wanted to share what someone can look like on this diet. He's not skin and bones, not that there is anything wrong with being skinny, but he didn't want it to turn into that so this is the plan we worked out for him.
ReplyDelete:)
This is SO good. My youngest son - 21 - is a fitness freak and trainer, and obviously MOM knows nothing. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is really good info - thanks!
Hi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteWell. If it ain't broke then don't fix it. I say that because if his diet is filled with fiber, greens, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc, then he is already well on the right track.
I have some tips/info on helping when something is actually wrong because I researched the hell out of it (like if his semen isn't in the best shape). But, if you don't know that, then I wouldn't load him up with some of the stuff that I did for my husband.
Vitamin E - very helpful for conception and helping support pregnancy (good for both of you). So, make sure you're getting it in your diet or supplement with an all natural pill. My favorite way to get it was from sprouted/dehydrated sunflower seeds and sometimes I used wheat germ oil (mixed it with olive oil for salad dressings and such - bought it from MountainRoseHerbs.com). We also took a supplement on occasion (my husband more than I did, but I still did it since I didn't want to eat seeds every day - lol). If you need recommendations for a supplement then let me know.
ALSO... I updated the post regarding animal-based protein powders because my husband was very much into whey when he was pre-vegan. Thanks for bringing that up.
Hugs and Love,
Kristen
Hello!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea, and not just for protein, but for any smoothie mix. Also, cute jars. Where ever did you find them?
Thanks.
Mmmm the jars... they're little mason jars that hold about a cup. I think I bought them at Walmart?
ReplyDeleteHi EatHealthyBeHappy,
ReplyDeleteI am not even subscribed to your newsletter - GASP!!! I will get on that straight away! Can't wait. :)
Thanks for the repost. :)
Right on RawSierra,
ReplyDeleteWe don't need a lot of protein to live a healthy existance. There are certain instances where some people can choose to increase it though, such as pregnancy, athletes, etc, which is fine in my opinion (so long as it's plant based). For a normal person though, it doesn't take a lot to thrive. :)
XOXO,
Kristen
Great! Thanks Kristen! Nothing wrong, that we know of, just like to be prepared! I emailed him this post! :)
ReplyDeleteIs there a greens powder that you can recommend for pregnant, nursing moms? Thanks for all you do! Perfect timing for our family with this article! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Angela,
ReplyDeleteI haven't used this, but here is one to check into:
http://www.healthforce.com/shop?page=shop.product_details&flypage=garden_flypage.tpl&product_id=9&category_id=1
Of course... check with your midwife or doctor. :)
Cheers,
Kristen
This is really useful. I get Brendan Brazer's Vega powder at my coop, is that at all similar to your raw grenades?
ReplyDeleteSince switching back to a raw diet a bit over a year ago I just keep dropping weight. I was thin to begin with, now I'm emaciated. Granted I don't eat or weight train as much as I should.
I can't thank you enough for posting this! I have been debating my boyfriend for a while now about how bad whey protein is and how much better his workouts would be if he ate better. I will definitely be sharing this post with him. It would make life so much easier if we could eat the same foods together.....
ReplyDeleteWow! Your hubby looks great!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I get the protein question often. Thanks for this post. I work out a lot and have been wondering about increasing my protein intake. This really does help me. =)
I'm so glad that everyone is finding the post useful. I think it's an important topic to address and so much better when there are personal testimonials to go along with it.
ReplyDeleteHi Eric,
It's similar to Vega in that I included the brown rice, hemp, and pea proteins, along with green powder and a fruit powder. I also add other things sometimes and I don't use the same ratios as them per se so it's not their formula... each serving of mine is also more protein I think because I use more protein. I've simply made sure to include multiple elements to get an excellent amount of amino acids. It makes a pretty substantial shake which shakes easily with water.
Thank you Kristen for doing this post. My boyfriend worries about this all the time and I keep telling him that he does not need protein to get lean muscle. I have Thrive and hopefully can get my boyfriend to read it too. Thanks for all the tips. I cannot wait to show him all this!!
ReplyDeleteAnother great post -- thank you -- as an aspiring athlete myself, I appreciate how you expanded on how the concepts in Thrive work for you (I also have found that book helpful). Thank you!
ReplyDelete1. DAYUM!!!!!
ReplyDelete2. can't wait to show this post to my doubtful husband
3. thank you so much for the recipes for these- love it
xoxo
Fitnessista - I got quite the chuckle from your comment - lol ;)
ReplyDeleteThis post gets me so excited!!!! I see that it works for your husband (to lead a High RAW Vegan diet, while weight training), why can't it work for me or my HUBBY!! I am GAME!!! Learn by example... and you two are my inspirational example!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the tips and info Kristen!!
HUGS!!
Malynda
I've been married 9 years, together 11. But can I just say, your hubs is in awesome, phenomenal hottie shape! Wow!
ReplyDeleteI love the info about the protein grenades.
My husband is nearly a vegetarian and used to be 50 lbs heavier a decade ago eating the SAD. 10 yrs later, a high raw vegetarian then vegan wife later (me!) he's moved down the spectrum with me. Love that you helped your hubby accomplish all this being vegan, high raw at that. You're awesome!
This is such great information! There are so many stereotypes associated with vegan and vegetarian diets and you did a great job debunking this one!
ReplyDelete-Jenna
Wow, look at your husband! You know how to pick 'em...! Thanks for this post, I'm going to try to lose a few pounds in the next few weeks so lean protein sources have been on my mind!
ReplyDeletethat's SERIOUSLY your dh?!?!? you're going to have a LOT of new fans to your site, Kristen!! LOL....must....stop....drooling.... :D
ReplyDeleteWow, this is great news! My husband lost so much weight, and a lot of muscle when we went to a mostly raw, vegan diet. He ran a marathon last year and was fueling on hemp and greens and feels great, but he wants to build muscle again and I didn't know the best way to do that. Thanks so much for the recipes! I'll be using them soon.
ReplyDeleteHey Kirsten, I know husbands often don't like to get too involved into our blogging-thing for privacy reasons, but would it be possible for my hubby to contact yours about diet/workout/etc.? He's pretty much exactly in the same situation as yours (down to nearly the exact same diet), but always wants to learn more from people who have similar goals/lifestyles! You guys are an awesome couple! It's always great to see such support for each other's choices (and hey, you both get to be super healthy and hot thanks to that!). Let me know! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteHi Chantal,
ReplyDeleteGo ahead and email me and I'll get you my husband's email.
Cheers,
Kristen
Hello,
ReplyDeleteBeen following your blog for quite sometime! I am trying to get pregnant and have really enjoyed reading about your nutrition! It's very encouraging and inspiring!
Anyway, I had recently purchased Rainbow Light's Protein Energizer. It says that I should consult a doctor before consuming it if pregant. However, the same non-vegan product: Whey Protein Enegizer states that it supports a healthy pregnancy. Any idea why the non-whey product has a "consult a doctor" warning?
No, but how interesting, huh?
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing set of abds! I enjoyed this post, too. Blush.
ReplyDeleteWould you take/recommend maca while breastfeeding? I really like the Amazing Meal (by Amazing Grass) and would like to use it once in a while (not daily) but there are such mixed opinions on maca (which is one of the ingredients). Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteI won't take maca during that time, but if you're concerned you should chat with your midwife or doctor about it. :)
ReplyDeleteKristen, showed my husband your husband's pic and right away he says "I WANT TO BECOME A RAW VEGAN!" We are both vegan, but haven't yet made the RAW jump.
ReplyDeleteHi Vegan Tickles - that's awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this post and the great information that I can now pass on to those who "judge" or think I'm crazy! Also, now I have some more ingredients to save up for! Thanks so much, Kristen!
ReplyDeleteKristen this post was FABU!
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend and I have been vegetarians (we eat wild BC Salmon on occasion however) for 4 months now (I was veggie before) and also just started a very rigorous training routine. He's a former international karate competitor so is quite concerned with his muscle mass and so forth. This post is GREAT for him - I told him immediately about it ;). I'll be looking into the various proteins (at the moment we use hemp protein and hemp seeds). The unfortunate part is - he STRONGLY DISLIKES Smoothies!
I have a green smoothie every morning for breakfast and the best I've been able to do for him was a banana/chocolate/strawberry smoothie, with very little protein powder and almond milk. He said it 'wasn't bad'. So I've gotta search for something he'll love!
As far as the VEGA stuff goes - I agree, I dislike their Whole Health Optimizer simply because the taste is just...far too earthy. It makes every smoothie taste like dirt to me. (Though I LOVE the nutritional profile). HOWEVER - Just yesterday I saw a new product that they haven't released in Can/US yet (just here in lovely Vancouver) - It's a Vega Sport PROTEIN. It comes in Berry and Vanilla, and is a mix of brown rice, hemp, pea protein, digestive enzymes etc. Supposedly it is formulated for proper recovery and performance and muscle building. I've tried the vanilla today and it was actually VERY good. Word on the street is it'll be released soon in the US (They're waiting for stores to get it in, before starting promo for it) and Canada.
Again - thanks for your inspiration and information. And as a side note - Cheezy Hemp Nacho sauce on 'taco salads' for dinner! YUM!
Sometimes just drinking the protein powder shakes with water is easier to get down. And quick. ;)
ReplyDeleteGlad you like the Cheezy Hemp Nacho Sauce!
Kristen, thank you for this post. I just got into a "messy" argument with a few people who were criticizing my raw vegan diet by saying that I cannot get sufficient amount of protein eating this way. This information comes at a perfect timing and I'll forward to them to see for themselves that it's not possible to get enough protein but also, get HEALTHY protein!
ReplyDeleteOne question about making the grenades: when you say 1 "scoop" how big is that scoop? I have Sunwarrior protein at home and their scoop is much bigger than other supplements' scoops. What size scoop do you refer to?
Thank you!
Hi Zoe,
ReplyDeleteOh, those "messy" arguments. At the point that they get messy I tell people to go do the research if they really care enough... read The China Study and then we can talk about it. ;)
I use the scoop in the container since that is how they measure the nutrient profile. So, two scoops is 30g of protein. It's a sizable amount of protein powder in each grenade when you add the other goodies into it, but with plain water, it's still quite thin and he drinks it down mixed with about 2 cups water. He uses one of those BPA-Free shaker bottles.
This is a great post! I am really inspired to go out and get some protein today...hopefully to up my energy...and to sneak some into my hubbys green smoothies....
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize Pea Protein was Raw. Is their a certain brand you recommend (as I would love to start adding it to my shakes)?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
My boyfriend and I have been on a raw kick lately and he just told me that his stamina for working out and weightlifting is through the roof! I told him about the protein grenades and he thinks we should get the stuff to make them. So...thanks for making a believer out of my boyfriend!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for bringing this to people's attention. Animal based protein (even whey) can cause all kinds of digestion problems and allergies.Plan protein is far better, especially when you mix it with other healthy goodies.
ReplyDeleteHi Kristen,
ReplyDeleteJust discovered your blog and i LOVE it!! I am new to vegan diet. My husband tries to follow me in our new diet but his goal is to try to gain mass and it's true he sometimes wonder how is he going to gain any mass with our diet (so i sent him the pic of your husband, to show him that it is possible). My goal on the contrary is to lose weight and tone myself. But i am sometimes scared that we might be missing what we really need to achieve our goals. Anyway, thank you so much for your infos.
And would love to get more on that subject!
Holy crap! How did I miss this post?! LOOK AT THAT SIX-PACK! That picture needs to be on a billboard somewhere showing people that plant-based foods CAN help build muscle! Wow.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome post, Kristen!
LOL Jess! Thanks :) I admit, I so ask him to go shirtless OFTEN!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this Kristen. I recently started a 40 day raw food challenge - you can read about it on my blog if you are interested - and my husband is concerned about me not getting enough protein. I will show him your article.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm off to try your chocolate cheesecake - yum!
Kristen: Just read this. Do you think your hubby would mind if you posted his workout routine? If I had a six-pack like that, I'd LOVE it if women started ovulating over me! :-)
ReplyDeleteLMAO, Juan-John :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea. I'll ask him to write something and I'll try to get it up by May.
Cheers,
Kristen
Great post! I ordered Hemp protein powder a while back because of your blog. Do you think it's ok to use it past the expiration date? I've kept it in the fridge. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm using one now past the exp date and I store mine in the freezer. Check with the company to verify though.
ReplyDeleteGreat article Kristen! Glad to see your husband is in great shape eating a plant based diet. Keep up all your excellent work.

This is great information Kristen:)I used to be a figure competitor, eating a typical competition diet, but I have been raw for 3 months now. I chose this lifestyle because I had bad digestive problems plus Hashimoto's disease. Eating this way has really changed how I feel. But I must admit that the protein thing had me wondering for quite a while. Right now I still train hard with weights and want to keep on getting leaner. However I haven't purchased any raw protein supplements yet because so far I feel great just eating fruit, veggies, nut and seeds. Do you think its necessary? I am not looking to build anymore muscle just keep what I have. Thanks:)
ReplyDeleteI think you're doing just great.
ReplyDeleteHello again, is the "Protein Grenade" recipe the same a year later?
ReplyDeleteThank you for such an inspiring, wonderful site! Loving the recipes and all the added info on nutrition! One of the best raw food sites (IMO)
Take Care & many blessings to your family!
Jani~nutrition and animals are my passion
You got it! He drinks 2-4 daily for most days. The recipe base is essentially the same although sometimes I run out of pea protein. Sometimes I add new elements like homemade curry powder or chia powder, stuff like that to diversify it a bit.
ReplyDeleteHi Kristen,
ReplyDeleteAbout 10 months ago my wife I am made the switch to vegetarian and then later started eating seafood along with recently only eating organic meats only (everything else as organic as possible of course!) That allowed my body to lose 80lbs in about 8 months! (and my asthma is almost non-existent! Best shape of my life!) Now we have started working out together and I have been searching about protein supplements. I am very interested in trying the protein grenades.
I was doing the math and it looked like approximately $180 worth of products. Have you ever figured out how how much it comes out to on average for a "per protein grenade" standpoint? I am not really sure how quickly a person empties these containers. I was initially considering just having "GOL Raw Protein" only after workouts but I see a lot of benefits to your grenades.
Thanks for all the great help you are providing so many people!
They are not cheap but they're so dense with nutrients. It helps that I buy in bulk. Check DimondHealth.com
ReplyDeleteIf you were to recommend only one protein mix instead of buying them all and mixing what would it be?
ReplyDeleteDo you recommend the same mixture of grenades for women or is a green smoothie a day enough?
If you were to recommend one essential supplement besides protein for raw foodist what would it be...
PS- LOVE YOUR BLOG!!!
Thanks for posting! I'm a raw vegan who works out a lot and this is just what I'm looking for!
ReplyDeleteHi, Jillian!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great questions.
1) If I could only have one protein powder, I'd go with Sun Warrior's Chocolate because it's high in protein and tastes the best so I know I'd actually drink it more.
2) Sure, if you want that much protein, you can drink the grenade. Green smoothies offer something different and not as potent, so I wouldn't compare them. Ideally you'd have both in your life.
3)Supplement that is essential for raw vegans... vitamin B12. Also, if you don't get enough sun exposure, I'd also put vitamin D2 on that must have list, too.
Cheers,
Kristen
thanks for the feedback. My husband tried the mixture this morning i had no fruits of earth so he said it tasted like sand. guess I will be getting that! Hope it does the trick. He was wondering if our husband had a training site and/or would be willing to share his training workout.
ReplyDeleteSince I have all the proteins now, what would you recommend for me post workout? I don't want "all that protein" and like to get all my nutrients from food but I know it is hard to eat that much food!!! And I guess I really SHOULD be supplementing a green powder- I fell off of that because they taste so horrible.
Thanks again!
Lol fruits of earth won't help much. Add 1/4 t or so of cinnamon. That might help flavor. Maybe a green Smoothie with protein powder after workout.
ReplyDeleteok last question I promise. My husband is drinking the grenade now and has HORRIBLE GAS!!! I tell him it is because he is still eating cooked food also but he said I just make up theories to support my beliefs- true! ANyhow, I want him to continue drinking since it gives him energy and he is getting too thin but I dont know is we can survive the smell! Any theories on the why and recommendations on how to fix it?
ReplyDeleteIt might be his body adjusting to the new "items" you're giving it. ;) Give it a month and see if it stops.
ReplyDelete
