Fruit Scoopers - A Best Friend In The Raw Kitchen - Coconut Noodles Anyone?

You ever wonder how some people get those awesome, young Thai coconut noodles that are actually long and noodle-like? I have an answer: Fruit Scoopers! The next time you want great coconut noodles, use a fruit scooper.

I love these kitchen gadgets. They come three in a package and I've yet to put the large (orange) scooper to real use yet, but I use the middle size (red) scooper ALL the time for avocado (video here), and I use the small (green) scooper for digging out my young Thai coconut meat. Perfect. Easy.

Once you scoop out the meat, you can clean them up a bit, and slice them as thin as you want using a knife. In this picture, I've simply shown you how they come out of the young Thai coconut after scooping; I haven't cut them into thin noodles yet. Fruit Scoopers ROCK!

  1. Hey Kristen! Hope you are feeling terrific! I have bought thai cocnuts three different times and each time I think I got bad ones. The meat inside is soft and gooey - is this how it is supposed to be? And one had brown meat! I have no idea how long Stater Bros. Market keeps these things on the shelf!

  2. Great Question!

The meat can vary from gel-ish like to more meat-like as you see in the picture. I prefer the more meat-like, meaning that it's more mature. But, it's always a toss up. That's why if I need one coconut, I always buy 2 in case one isn't that good. The water can vary in color from somewhat clear-ish to yellow-ish to light brown-ish and the bottom line is that it should taste GOOD! The times I've cracked one open and had a water/meat that was pink-ish in color, I didn't care for the taste and deemed it was a bad coconut. I take my receipt back and get refunded when that happens.

Going by the taste is how I judge them since they can vary so much.

  4. Hi Kristen - These are pretty! I'll try to remember your advice about the freshness if I ever find a young coconut in the UK ... I also wanted to let you know that I found a supplier for the vitamins :-)
