Chocolate While Trying To Conceive or Pregnant

I've received a number of emails and blog comments from women asking about the consumption of chocolate while trying to conceive and/or while pregnant. It's a great question. I know that during previous blog posts I was avoiding chocolate when trying to conceive, and at the time I imagined that I'd also be avoiding it during pregnancy. That said, it's important to constantly reassess values, ideas, and plans on an ongoing basis to see if things change when new information becomes available (or when hormones take over, LOL... just kidding. Mostly.). But in all seriousness, as you'll read below, yes, it's true: I have enjoyed some Raw chocolate while pregnant. So. What changed? Read on...

As many of you know, I'm not a midwife or doctor, so the information I'm sharing is about what I am doing and is in no way prescriptive for you.

Chocolate While Trying to Conceive
When I was TTC (trying to conceive) I eliminated virtually all caffeine including chocolate, coffee, and tea. I might have had one or two bites of Raw chocolate over a span of a couple of months at a time, but you get the picture. Chocolate has a limited amount of caffeine and so I was avoiding it. It also has another "stimulating" type of ingredient called theobromine, which interestingly literally means food of the gods.

Do I think chocolate needs to be avoided completely while TTC? Not necessarily. I do think there are some bad forms of chocolate and I think there are some healthier options. Personally, I would avoid the bad forms, i.e. processed, non-vegan, loaded-with-crap chocolate. The healthier option would be Raw, organic, vegan, dark chocolate. That said, not everyone responds well to chocolate, raw or otherwise, so that should be taken into consideration.

Chocolate While Pregnant
During my first trimester, I don't recall having any Raw chocolate... I might have had a bite, but I remember staying away from it, so maybe I had my chocolate in a dream? :) When I think back, I didn't have a solid reason for my choc-abstinence, other than thinking it might be too stimulating from the caffeine (albeit limited) or theobromine, or that having it meant also having the sugar (like the agave in many chocolate recipes). Interestingly, I have since read of a study showing a link between regular chocolate consumption and reduced risk of miscarriage during the first trimester. Go figure.

Now that I'm in my second trimester, I have had a couple of pieces of Raw organic vegan chocolate here and there. What changed? Honestly, I don't know that I can pinpoint it exactly. For starters, I am sticking to the Raw variety while pregnant, so I have that going for me. The other thing that happened to me was that, frankly, I really wanted a piece! It sounded so good. I was having a number of headaches at the time and maybe my body was telling me I needed magnesium. Raw chocolate is a great source for that. My hormones were raging, too, so perhaps my mind craved chocolate's calming effects. Perhaps there was a magical force drawing me, as though by instinct alone, to my freezer where the Raw chocolate was just sitting there, waiting to be eaten. I'm guessing it's all of the above.

I spoke with my midwife and she is fine if I have some chocolate. I've since learned that many healthy pregnant women I know indulged in chocolate happily and without guilt while pregnant - I was suddenly the weird one for having stayed away from it. To be sure, I continued with my research and found that prenatal chocolation is fine according to some other books and sources as well. For example, in Shazzie's wonderful and colorful book about pregnancy and birth, Evie's Kitchen, she writes, "...We also discovered that researchers had found babies born to chocolate-eating mothers were happier."

Overall, I feel comfortable enjoying my Raw chocolate in moderation. I might add that it tastes so wonderful - it feels so wonderful - that I'm confident it's spreading good feelings and vibes through my body when I have it, which are shared with my baby. Within reason, happy mommy = happy Monkey.

I totally understand if some women avoided it altogether and I would also understand if someone had some (although I wouldn't recommend consuming large quantities). Based on all of the conflicting points of view on this subject, I'm of the opinion that there is no broad consensus as of yet on a "right answer" that can be confidently prescribed for all women. And remember, every woman is different and every pregnancy is different. As always, if you have concerns, a good place to start is by discussing the matter with your midwife or doctor.

So, I'd love to hear your feedback. Did you eat chocolate while you were pregnant? Why or Why Not? If so, how much?

  1. Thanks for sharing, Kristen! I love the phrase, "prenatal chocolation!" I'm going to have to work that into my vocabulary somehow... ;D

  2. Great post!

I was under the impression that chocolate during pregnancy was a no no so I stayed away from it as soon as I found out I was pregnant. It was hard to because just the week before I had received some great samples which I didn't end up trying- however my husband was happy he got to eat them all haha.

  3. Thanks for all of the info. I was one of the emails you received on chocolate! Right now I am still consuming it. I do not drink coffee or any other caffeinated beverages though. I think that after my birthday I am going to cut back big time (a month or so before TTC). Thanks for this post, I am sure I will want some while pregnant!

  4. Yes, I do eat chocolate from time to time. My midwife said it was perfectly fine in moderation of course. I have possibly 1-2 pieces a week. My tastes have changed a bit so I don't crave sweet things like I used to (which is nice!).

  5. I agree with you, it depends upon the kind of chocolate you eat. I've always loved chocolate and I definitely ate plenty while I was pregnant. Recently I've discovered radicalhealth.com and met the owner of it (David Favor). He sells cacao products that are really the most wholesome and best chocolate products you can get (as I understand it). He has a product called "chocolate bliss" that has a concoction of super foods in it and a zesty or savory product called "fiesta mole" that he recommends adding to soups, or salads even. So I just barely bought those and I love the chocolate bliss. He talks about "bliss feasting" where that is almost all he has all day long. But if you look at the ingredients in it, then no wonder why he can have that all day long. One thing I learned from him is that we often crave chocolate to balance our moods. A lot of times the form we get it in isn't the best though. Personally I'm more than happy to have chocolate all the time, and I'm coming to enjoy it in better forms.

  7. In the first trimester of both pregnancies, I just didn't want chocolate, which was odd since I am a huge chocolate lover! At somepoint during the second tri, I started to want it again and ate as much as I wanted. I ate vegan dark chocolate in the first pregnancy, and I ate a lot. Lots and lots! In my second, I had some raw cacao in a smoothie most days, and sometimes a dessert with cacao, but not a lot. It wasn't a thought out plan, just what felt best and sounded good. I think I craved more toward the end of pregnancy, and even ate some during labor! Fun. Both my kids were very happy babies, although my second is more relaxed in general. If it feels good, it will be fine. :) My second has never seemed to react to cacao in my breastmilk either.

  9. I'm the same. Due to nausea & lack of interest & avoiding caff, I didn't eat chocolate until the interest came back during my 2nd trimester, then I got totally into Rawganic chocolate.

I think/hope that cacao babies are happier! My mum overheard staff in a shop observing Alice: "there's that baby who smiles all the time." !! :) xoxo

  11. Chocolate! Yes I had it while I was pregnant. In the 1st and halfway thru the 2nd trimesters I was horrifically sick with all day sickness. It was really bad, I was one of those women who just had morning sickness to beat the band...so I really don't know what I ate. LOL Whatever I could choke down even if it didnt stay down. By about 20 weeks, that began to lift some and I enjoyed hot tea and chocolate. Not together but yes, I enjoyed them!

The chocolate (although I dont remember brands) from Whole Foods b/c that was our closest grocery store then. And the tea was Constant Comment, non organic orange zesty tea. And I loved every sip :) I wouldnt say I ate tons of choc or anything, I just ate til I was satisfied LOL. And I think with pregnancy and then parenthood...there's you're "going into it" expectations and then there's the "actual reality of what happens". I am happy for you that you're able to say hey, wait a minute, I'd like some chocolate, and then enjoy it!

Thanks so much sweet Kristen for your lovely comments the past few posts...when you told me I had such a bright smile, well, it made me smile..I still am :)
    xoox

  13. With all 3 pregnancies, I made no effort to limit the amount of chocolate, and it definitely wasn't raw chocolate (which I'd never even heard of til recently). I also did consume some caffeine, although I was careful. I managed to avoid morning sickness and all three kids were born healthy and generally happy. I was fortunate that things turned out so well despite some of those choices.

  14. I didn't touch a bite of chocolate with my first two pregnancies because my doctor told me not too. By the third I did eat some chocolate but still not a lot. I'm OCD so I just did it more for that than anything else : )

At this point in my life it would take wild horses to drag me away from Raw chocolate if it's offered : )

  15. This is very interesting. I have heard that it's best to stay away from caffeine while trying to conceive, but I haven't heard much about the effects while pregnant. Good to now it's ok in moderation!

  16. I don't recall avoiding chocolate myself when I was pregnant but you really nailed it when you said, "happy mommy=happy Monkey". I read something similar years ago and I think it is absolutely true. My now going on 5 year old has been a pretty happy kid himself since day 1. So, enjoy the chocolate!

  17. I avoided caffeine like the plague too because I heard/read whatever that it could cause problems with conception and also for miscarraiges (I had two and it broke my heart)

so I was paranoid about it for a while.

sooner or later, as things were all find and dandy with pregnancy...I had a bit here and there. not much but a little caffeine to help with a headache was better thana tylenol in my book.

I still only consume a scant bit of coffee and a bit more of chocolate but the kind I eat now is way better than the hershey's kind I ate way back then.

    always striving to improve, no?
    :)

    SECOND TRIMESTER! AWESOME!

  20. I didn't eat much chocolate (I should say raw cacao) while pregnant; I had some here and there but in my last trimester I sorta went to town. :) Okay, I didn't go overboard but every week I had an organic chocolate bar. Mmm...I would take it with me to my birthing class. I also eliminated caffeine from the diet for about a year prior to getting pregnant. I don't think I worried too much about cacao but again, I wasn't the type to go overboard with it anyway. I hear cacao is good to chow down leading up to your due date to help with labor...er, I think. Don't quote me because now I don't remember so well. :) Did I just talk in circles?

  21. I ate chocolate everyday during both pregnancies and gave birth to two healthy children :-)

  22. I didn't eat chocolate the 1st trimester because I wanted to stay away from the caffeine and because high-fat and sugary foods were a big turn off. Now, I am 30 weeks and enjoy good quality chocolate-it feels great and not over-stimulating. My body has continued to tell me very clearly throughout my pregnancy what is a good idea and what to avoid like the plague! Follow your Intuition Goddesses!

  23. I had a piece of raw vegan chocolate today (soooo YUM!) and also had it in a smoothie (Extra YUM!).

  24. I'm pretty new to your blog and just read this blog post and thought I'd add a comment...

I'm a pretty big chocolate lover... I honestly don't remember eating much chocolate at all with my first pregnancy, but with this one I didn't eat any chocolate in the 1st trimester, mainly because I had super bad morning sickness through the 1st and into the 2nd trimester. I started feeling better around 16 weeks this time and chocolate just didn't sound good to me until recently (like this past week). I'm about 8 weeks away from my due date and I'm trying really hard to keep it in moderation.

  27. Dark chocolate has a positive side, unless the source of good cholesterol, dark chocolate is a food soul food make you happy. Dark chocolate contains tryptophan, which is a chemical used in the brain to produce serotonin - the hormone of happiness. In addition, dark chocolate contains phenylethylamine, a chemical found in nature, also known as the love drug. Phenylethylamine is a chemical that mimics the brain chemistry of love a person, so that when the level is high body relieves depression, unrequited love. This is the main reason chocolate is known to be an aphrodisiac. And until the chocolate is sexual, it can be bad if the couple has tried to think of the right.
    Thanks

  28. Great topic! I am a bigtime chocolate (raw cacao) lover. I ate lots of cacao before conceiving. During my first trimester, I had some nausea, and chocolate sounded too heavy (I was eating mostly fruit, green juices and crunchy seed things... weird things sounded good!). During my 2nd and 3rd I had it regularly, though smaller amounts and less frequently than before (and after) my pregnancy. I found out that we're less able to metabolize xanthine substances during pregnancy, and an amount of chocolate that affects us a certain way has 3 times the effect during pregnancy! That seemed to be true, as I required much smaller amounts to feel the effects I was going for :)

Since my pregnancy, I've gone through periods of eating larger quantities, alternating with small amounts or none. Early on while breastfeeding, I thought it might be affecting my son in my milk, but after many experiments I found no correlation.

He is 14 months now, and is an exceptionally happy and exuberant child!!!
