Kristen- I see you use a lot of lucuma powder in your recipes, I am assuming as a sweetener... and am curious about your feelings/thoughts about Stevia??

Also- I recently had weight loss surgery (not bypass.... I have a normally functioning stomach and digestive tract, just a VERY small stomach) and the diet prescribed by the entire WLS community is SUPER high protein and low carb... I want to incorporate more of a raw (not quite vegan) lifestyle and diet, but not sure how this would measure up to the typical low carb high protein my surgeon recommends. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks so much- i really enjoy your blog!

I have really only used lucuma recently in some recipes. It does add a subtle sweetness to it, but I rarely use enough for that to be the case. More, it kind of enhances the sweetness already there from the raw organic agave nectar or dates which I typically use. I also like stevia, just haven't used it a bunch.

I hesitate to suggest anything regarding your diet since you're under a doctor's care and I'm not a physician. I'd like to think that adding fresh fruits (maybe your doc would be amenable to non-sweet fruits) and vegetables would be beneficial because they're loaded with nutrients. Good Luck!

Kristin,

Thanks- I appreciate your hesitance regarding medical advice, etc... I was actually really wanting to hear how you felt about the ability to get in high protein with high raw/vegan diets. I know you use hemp protein and rice protein a lot, so was curious if you felt those measure up to/beat the typical protein shakes on the general market. For the first few weeks I am on a mostly liquid diet, and would love to incorporate better proteins/more variety/possibly plant blood type things as well. Just thought maybe you would have some ideas since you have done a lot of the weight lifting, etc..
Thanks!
also wondering- since your plant bloods usually don't have a lot of fruit in them, and they take out the fiber factor... would they be considered low carb? My surgeon is a very traditional guy- not into the holistic or naturopathic (obviously) so if I can talk to him armed with info, it would help. :)

Hi,
One of the points when eating vegan is that we don't eat high protein diets. The two do not really go hand in hand... unless you're a competitor for bodybuilding or something and sometimes they drink lots of vegan protein shakes, etc. However, that being said, there are athletes out there who love and embrace the low protein model. Yes, the hemp and raw rice protein have more protein in them. It might be a good way to go. The rice is higher in protein than the hemp, but the hemp is a great source of fiber and essential fatty acids.

Yes, I would consider most of my plant bloods low carb. Since fiber doesn't have calories, you basically just add up the carbs and calories that each fruit/veggie has and you'll see the amount you're getting. Juices are concentrated though, so it can add up quickly.

A green juice of cucumber, celery, kale, and lemon juice doesn't have much by way of calories or carbs compared to juices with fruit. :)
