I did it! I went to the other side. I bought a Mac. I've been wanting to be in the group with the seemingly "cool" kids for some time now, but I kept putting it off. However, I couldn't put it off anymore. My productivity is suffering and it's time to upgrade. My reason for going to the Mac was because I'm a Raw foodie and the symbol for Mac is an apple. Hehehe... JUST KIDDING!For the past many years, I've relied on my trusty Sony Vaio laptop. It's had some issues but because I bought the extended warranty, I was covered when it acted up. I originally bought a slim laptop (vs. a desktop) because I was working in a corporate setting and I needed this for portability reasons, using in bed when working late, etc. But, it's small. The screen is small. And, since I'm no longer working in that environment and I'm usually at home, it made sense to get a desktop. Even though my laptop is falling apart, I will still use it for travel so it's not going into permanent retirement... only semi-retirement.
I'm on cloud nine for a while (a long while I suspect). I can wait until it arrives later this week. I know, I know... it's only a computer. But, I expect GREAT things from this new addition to our family.
I suspect there will be a learning curve, but I'm not sure how intense. As most of you know, I have a BlackBerry (I frequently use this for email - talk about a life changing device for me!). From what I understand, I need to buy some software in order to back up my BlackBerry on my new iMac. Still need to figure all that stuff out. I'm also curious as to how people like Safari? How are the other programs?
Anyone have any advice or feedback?

Congrats! I started with a mac laptop a year and a half ago, then got a mac desktop a year ago. I can say as sure as I can that every computer I ever buy from now on will be an Apple. The best way to put it is that it's simply a far more efficient system than windows.
The learning curve is minimal - more just getting the "feel" of the terms and look. It's very logical, user friendly, and you don't have to worry about 100,000 computer viruses out there.
CONGRATULATIONS KRISTEN!!!
Hi dsharp88,
Thanks for the great comment! I'm even more excited!
Hi Shelby,
Thanks for commenting. I'm stoked :)
Cheers,
Kristen
Kristin,
If I can learn eat raw veggies you can learn to use a Mac! I have been on a Mac since computer day 1. They are easy, fun and dependable. You can say good-by to your computer consultant as well.
Best wishes, ChuckieFrog
I made the MAC switch a few years ago and I LOVE my IMAC! Congrats! I love Safari, iphoto, Ical, Mail, photo booth, umm ok I love it all. lol
:) welcome to the cool kids group! lol
:)tj
I love my MacBook.
Welcome to the dark side ;)
I love my Mac Book .... You won't be disappointed!
Yay! Another convert, I love it! I absolutely ADORE my MACs and my iPhone. I have my contacts, music, pictures, calendar, etc all fully integrated and it was SO easy to do.
I actually use Firefox vs Safari as far as web browsing goes and I use Thunderbird (also from Mozilla) for mail/some RSS feeds, etc.
There are SO many applications made for MACs, loads being free too! I use NeoOffice for all my document, spreadsheet needs (integrates great with Microsoft Office), I use Flickr Uploader to load photos directly to Flickr from my desktop, what else... oh geez, wish we lived closer, I'd have you come over for a MAC 101 sesh. :)
Oh, and I love my built-in camera/video capabilities... it's awesome!! And so easy to use :)
MACs are extremely intuitive and yes, you won't have to worry about most viruses at all.
Congrats again and ping me if you have any questions, I'd be happy to help :)
Congrats! I converted about 8 months ago and I absolutely love it. I use Macs for professional and personal use, and I'll never go back to Windows. If you ever need any help, I'd be happy to provide any assistance.
I give it one day with the mac and you'll never use that laptop again. =) I have a really nice pc laptop but even so I just can't deal after spending the day working on the mac. And I love Safari. Congratulations!
Heck yes, having a Mac is like the health food of computers! No joke - the only thing you'll have trouble with is realizing you're over thinking it. On a mac, it really is that easy ;) I recommened Firefox as an alternative to Safari. Also download iTunes, and there is a widget for Google Reader, is saaa-weeet! :D
Have a nice night, and congrats!
Everything you hear is true! It's so intuitive it just "makes sense" when you're using it. I have a MacBook and I LOVE it. It's so cool; every day I feel like I'm learning new shortcuts and figuring out new things it can do (most recently I learned it can read text to me!). You'll be so happy with it!
Way to go Kristen! I love my Mac and wouldn't ever buy anything else. Of course that's all I've ever had so a PC is just confusing to me:)
OMG you are still a girl after my own heart!! Tee hee. I know the feeling. My laptop is dying already and I keep finding excuses NOT to buy an IMAC. I really want the same one you have just bought. I have a massive personal goal and if and when I achieve it then I am going to buy myself it as a reward complete with an Iphone I think. Woo Hoo! Tell me how the cool club feels!!!
:D
Welcome to the family!
Once you use a Mac, you can never go back. I became a convert a couple of years ago.
I prefer Firefox over Safari.
Have FUN!
Hi Carrie and Geetarista,
Thanks for the offers! I might take you up on them. :)
And, to everyone... Awww! You're such an awesome group of Mac lovers! Thanks for the welcome into your family!!!
Like the others have said - once you go mac, you NEVER go back, seriously. A mac saves you so much stress and worries, and you can definitely expect a lot from it, this machine will change your relationship with computers, it's awesome!!! Btw love your blog! :)
Hello Kristen and everyone,
My laoptop is nearing the end of its life, and I, too have been thinking about a Mac, or else the Sony that you had, Kristen. I would be interested in reading future blog posts about how you find the Mac, and also I would like to hear some critism or negatives about it - I fear that this post is only generating positive Mac feedback (so far) and was wondering if there are any downsides to using a Mac that someone could comment on(?).
I love my mac. it has a lot fewer problems than i did with my PC. it did take awhile to learn and i'm still learning all the ins and outs of it. but no problems in 2 years. i have a big screen 24 inch which we use to watch movies on.
The Mac is the WORST polluter and they have a real reliability issue. People complain about windows based machines, but MACs are really more problematic in the real world.
Congratulations, Kristen!
I went Mac few years ago (and iPhone a few months ago) and my life was changed forever! The learning curve is minimal, Mac is so user friendly, you will be amazed at its simplicity, usability, and virus-free environment :)
I personally use and LOVE Flock browser, it's very Web 2.0 friendly, great for twitters, Facebook addicts, and bloggers. Lots of cool plug-ins to make your online life fun and pleasurable.
I'm soooo jealous. I love Macs too. I use to use when when I was an Editor for a newspaper. Im stuck with a pc because of our business. It really is easy to learn. You will love it. Enjoy!
Macs are the best! I grew up in a "Mac" family and just love Macs. Safari works great, but you may also want to try Mozilla Firefox as well to see which you prefer. You will really enjoy iPhoto if you take pictures. It makes photo storage and editing very easy.
You should also check out YummySoup recipe software. It is wonderful for keeping recipes organized, inexpensive, and it is only for Macs! It is super easy and has awesome features. (If you're interested you can check out a review I did of it at my blog: http://healthynhappyhome.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/my-new-sea-cow/)
Have a good day and welcome to the Mac club!
YES!! Selim will be happy ;)
Hi Alexandra :)
Ha! That's funny!!! Love it!
And, to the person who wrote about them being polluters... I could be way off here, but I could have sworn I read an article a while back stating that they were making "green" changes to be more environmentally friendly.
Cheers,
Kristen
I'm a total Mac person so I'm biased. PC's confuse me! But now that you are a convert will you get an iPhone instead of a Blackberry?
Good luck, I bet you'll love it once you get used to it!
Hi Michelle,
That's a good question. I've only had my BlackBerry Curve for over a year now and I really LOVE it. It's truly changed my life regarding business. I use it for email constantly, which I heard is not the reason to get an iPhone (which is supposed to be great for web browsing, which I don't do a lot of with my BB).
Any thoughts?
I bought my first mac earlier this year and I love it! It didn't take me as long to get used to it as I thought it would. I'm so excited for you! Congrats!
My husband had an iphone and LOVED it, until he changed jobs and needed to be dealing with emails 24-7, and then made the switch to a Blackberry. He didn't like it at first, but now is inseparable from it. He used the iphone sometimes for personal stuff, playing around, etc.
Once you go mac you never go back!
I love me macbookpro!
Congrats on the new machine! I'm a mac moron, but that is very exciting!
Once you go MAC, you NEVER go back.
You'll have zero problems adjusting to a MAC. They are so simple and to Safari is easy to understand. Oh, and also the mail icon on the dock makes retrieving and sending email so easy.
Wow, excellent. Congrats to you!
There seem to be free applications for the Blackberry for syncing to Macs (this used to be one of few missing features, but I hear this new app helps a lot) http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/mac.jsp
And here are some great free apps to look into for the Mac: http://www.gabejacobsblog.com/top-25-best-mac-osx-freeware-apps-2 . I use Quicksilver, Adium, & VLC daily
kristen - i don't know how you can't love the mac:) i do! and i was a PC user for years. my husband got into some graphics and insisted he must have the Apple MacBook Pro laptop. I was convinced it would take me weeks to even learn how to run safari! haha... but its so easy. really. you'll be up/running in no time! and the biggest perk to me (besides the ease of the mac itself) is that no more worry about all these viruses! our laptop was always battling some virus despite antivirus software (which slowed down its processing as well). the mac has no issues with potential viruses! YAH! and processing time is quick! hope you are enjoying it!
WOOHOO!!! How are you lovin your apple???
