For those of you who have followed my blog for a long time, you know about my insane love affair with organic watermelon (read more here and here). Basically, when it comes to organic watermelon... I have a problem. The addiction is intense. Quite honestly, I can't make myself stop!I just picked up my first EVER locally grown, organic watermelon. Holy heck of all get out - this thing was awesome (that was the PG rated version of my thoughts). The CSA I'm a member of (details here) is where I refueled my seasonal addiction for the first time this year. Let me tell you, friends, I'm in trouble. This watermelon was so delicious. And, the fact that it was picked no more than a few days before I had it in my greedy little hands... well, that just takes my excitement to a whole new level.
As usual, I have a nice little ritual when it comes to prepping my watermelon. I get out my beautiful knife and I start cutting the watermelon into big double-bite-size chunks. Then, I get out 3-4 bowls with lids (depending on the size) and I start putting the watermelon in it. Off to the fridge it goes... except that I keep eating a bite every other time I make a cut in the watermelon. It's insane. I just keep eating it and eating it and eating it - to the point that I make myself a little sick - LOL.
When it comes time for eating it later (after I've put it away in the fridge all sectioned and chopped), I (attempt) to stop the madness of eating it non-stop by disciplining myself and taking out a small serving bowl. I then fill up the serving bowl to the tippy top and beyond (it ends up overflowing with watermelon as I try to balance one extra piece after another on top) with the goal that by using a small bowl I will take it to my desk and I won't stand over the large bowl in the kitchen and.... eat it all.
Sometimes my plan works. Sometimes it doesn't. Put it this way. I cut into the big watermelon for the first time on Saturday afternoon, and by Sunday (very late) night... most of it was gone.

For those of you following my Raw food intake, here was Saturday's food. I did go to bed feeling a little hungry.
~ Filtered Water, 8 strawberries (locally grown through the CSA), 1 cup fresh orange juice (locally grown and just picked myself)
~ Water
~ 3 cups Plant Blood juiced with my Breville (carrots, zucchini, ginger)
~ Protein Shake (water, 3T Sun Warrior's Raw Rice Protein Powder, 2T Manitoba Harvest's Hemp Protein, 1t Amazing Grass' Wheat Grass powder) I LOVE this combination - it fills me up, the wheat grass is alkalizing, and I get a solid amount of protein.
~ 4 strawberries, Krautwich (Soft-n-Savory Hemp Onion Bread , Raw unpasteurized organic sauerkraut), 1/3 cup hummus with 4 flax crackers
~ 3 cups watermelon
~ 2 cups watermelon
~ Herbal Tea (Raspberry leaf from Mountain Rose Herbs - my favorite source for organic teas, the freshness is unsurpassed)
~ 2 cups watermelon

My husband LOOOOOVES WATERMELON!! He fills my HUGE salad bowl with it and eats away! I swear he can put away a whole one if he wanted! He usually eats half one night and half the next just about every night in the summer. Ginger loves it too! I am a fan, but not like him!
Podcasts and videos sound great!
Hi Lauren,
Thanks for your comment! It's a relief to know that I'm not the only one!!
"Hello, my name is Kristen. I'm addicted to watermelon."
Maybe there are other addicts out there besides your husband and myself - LOL!
Cheers,
Kristen
I could totally eat a whole watermelon in one day. It's my favorite summer fruit =)

Ooo podcasts :) I could watch you/listen to you on the go. That would be perfect for me ... looking forward to it ^_^
I started my near-addictive watermelon behavior a week ago. Besides eating watermelon cup after cup, I also found it a wonderful base for my smoothies.
I'm with you on Watermelon. I love it too. Maybe the fact that we only get it for a few months of the year helps keep it dear.
As far as the videos and podcasts--I'd love that.
I looooooveeeee watermelon. My love for watermelon knows no bounds. At my third birthday party, my mother cut up a whole watermelon and set it out on the food table. I pulled my chair up to the watermelon and proceeded to devour the entire thing, slice by slice. My parents love this story and every time there is a watermelon in my house, it gets told. If I am alone in the house, sometimes it's hard for me to not simply dig at half a watermelon with a spoon until its gone. Such a good summer treat.
I do the exact same thing with watermelon, love it!! The only thing is that since I went Raw both times I've eaten watermelon the next day I was sooo bloated. Do you think this is coincidence or have you heard of this happening to other people? Yes, I think videos/podcasts would be fabulous!
Ive been known to devour a whole watermelon myself in a day -or so. :) Dont get me started on cherries either! lol
Oh I love watermelon too. Its the best!
Oh yes, I do love me some watermelon! Every time you post about it, I start drooling, ha.
I'm so so so envious of your CSA, that guy has such a great set up. I think he's actually ahead of the curve when it comes to how they are run and we will soon see more CSAs in general but more and more following a similar model to his where folks get to choose what they get!
I have pondered a CSA in my area, will be looking at it again, I just always have found a plethora of amazing goodness at the farmer's market and I love going there every Saturday to pick up my weekly motherload of veggies :)

Hi everyone,
thanks for posting comments!!!
Hi Nicole,
do you eat the watermelon with any other food or are you eating it alone? it might be fermenting in your system, causing the bloat. if you're eating it alone, and in large quantity, then it could bloat you a bit, but traditionally, that is not my experience.
Cheers,
Kristen
I can eat a whole (massive mediterranean sized) watermelon by myself in one seating. MMm!
Maybe they secretly put MSG or something equally addicting in watermelons? I, too, can't stop eating it when I have one in the fridge...
Hi everyone!!!
I'm loving all this love for watermelon! I don't feel like such a freak - haha! Apparently, I'm in GREAT company! WHEW!
Cheers!
Kristen :)
Podcasts and video blogs are a GREAT idea!
Yes do the podcasts and video blogs! yay!
I now have a serious craving for watermelon
Well, if there's a 12 Step Program for Watermelon Addicts, sign me up! I qualify.
Here in the arctic tundra, our growing season is considerably shorter than yours. But while they were in season last summer, I'd go visit the organic farmer down the road, pick up a BIG just-picked melon and make a couple of meals out of it.
I love mono meals of fruit in the hot, humid summer. And, nothing tastes like summer more than juicy ripe watermelon.
Ohmygod, I'm salivating now.
YES to the podcasts. Please.
Kristin, I found a really good recipe last year for watermelon gazpacho on Cooking Light. I would be interested to get your take on it. I will send it along if you are interested.
Hi ChuckieFrog,
I actually only eat my watermelon alone as a rule for proper digestion and food combining. I'm not a stickler (usually) for the other food combining rules, but I religiously stick to the rule of MELONS ALWAYS ALONE.
So, anytime I eat any kind of melon, I only eat it with melon and no other ingredients, like might be found in a gazpacho, unless it's totally watermelon gazpacho - haha. I mean, a seasoning might be okay, like some orange zest or a little fresh ginger, but other than that, I keep it plain ol' watermelon.
I do bet, though, that it tastes delicious!!!!!
Cheers,
Kristen
I just had a quater of a watermelon for breakfast.
Hurray for Watermelon!
Podcasts and vids are an awesome idea. Will be looking forward to it Kristen!
Oh my I love watermelon! I really should go out and get one asap!
Otherwise I'm just admiring your rawness... seriously :) I'm about to attempt a transition towards that way myself. Any tips? You seem to have it down packed!
it's pretty good to be addicted to watermelons :)
i like water- and honeymelons :)
I saw the firsts of the organic watermelon this weekend and thought of you!! (Been reading for a long time!) I should have known you'd do a post on it soon :)
I WISH I had that addiction to watermelon but unfortunately I have that "can't stop no self control" addiction to MEDJOOL DATES! Much worse, so much sugar. I seriously cannot keep a box in my home. I always eat them ALL it's terrible!!
Enjoy your watermelon!!
Wait! Organic watermelon?!? What a rare find and I run a wholesale organic produce buying club! Gotta get my hands on some. I share the same watermelon addiction! Juicy sweet goodness.
Watermelon addiction ~ you're certainly not alone. Okay, I'm coming out of the closet to say ~ I have this same addition. Peter does too. ;-) We haven't had our first watermelon of the season yet. Can't wait.
Thumbs up to podcasts and videos!!! I think it's a great idea. Peter and I are also working on the same for his project and for mine. Let's exchange tips.
What a beautiful tribute to watermelon! I confess, it has never been a favorite, but you've inspired me to eat more of it :)
Ooooohh my luscious luscious watermelon - I love you too!! So good isn't it...
Casey
Hi Kristen,
Let's hear it for watermelon love! I very happily lugged my first watermelon home from Doug's this weekend and dove into it on Sunday. I was so happy when he said he'd have watermelon this weekend! And so excited we'll have watermelon for the next 5 months!! It's such a great way to keep hydrated during these Arizona summer's. Mine doesn't usually make it to a bowl - usually I'm full by the time I'm done cutting!!
Heather
It's so easy to eat a whole watermelon, they're delcious and I absolutley love juiced watermelon, it's such a pretty, sweet, pink juice :)
Girl I just ate 1/2 of a watermelon..first thing tomorrow I'm going to store for another one,lol

DANG-EE!!! I'm feeling totally great about the fact that I'm not the only one addicted to this juicy fruit! Thanks to everyone for chiming in and letting me know! You know what that means... I'm going to feel free to eat MORE next time I crack into one (Saturday, when I stock up at the Farmer's Market!).
Cheers,
Kristen
