I've been trying out a new hair care system for about the past month, and I'm loving it. My hair is about 90% grown out now (with my natural color of chocolate brown), and I adore it. It's soft, silky, and oh-so-healthy! For those of you interested in the story of my transformation from blond locks to brunette tresses, read here.
Prior to finding this other company for hair care, I was using Terressentials mud to wash my hair (since about August 2008). That was an interesting and neat experience. But... a couple of months ago, from time to time, I was getting flakes. Eek! I tried using an apple cider vinegar/water rinse and I tried using coconut oil, but without success. Also, (after washing) some days my hair was soft and clean feeling, other days it wasn't. (Don't get me wrong, I still love many of their products, but I think my time with their hair care products was coming to an end).
I decided to look for another line that was as natural as I could get. I even thought I was willing to compromise a tiny bit with the ingredients (and not be such a purist), so I looked at Aubrey Organics, Suki, and some others. But, every time I read the labels, I couldn't help but feel a little disheartened when comparing them to the purity of Terressentials' mud. I work so hard to keep my body clean internally and externally that I just couldn't compromise in the end.
Morrocco Method comes to the rescue!
I did some more searching online and came upon Morrocco Method products. I was immediately intrigued because the website boasts about its products being Raw, Vegan, and Eco-friendly. My pulse quickened and my eyes devoured the entire website.
However, before committing, I decided to google some reviews about it. For the most part, people's reviews show they love the line, including a very good review from Organic Lifestyle Magazine who highly recommends the products (read review here). I agree with the issue OLM had with the company's accompanying literature in the package (it's a little on the pathetic side, yet it is informative). OLM also had an issue with how the staff treated them, but I must say that when I called them with some questions, they were extremely friendly and very professional. And, I scored some free samples in my package, including a face scrub (love it!) and I've since gone back to order a bottle of it.
There were a couple of reviews online that weren't great about the shampoos, but for those people, it seems that their main complaint was either the lack of lather or the price or the smell. The different products smell very earthy and I actually really like it. As for the lack of lather... well, you're looking at a gal who shampooed with mud for months (zero lather), so I'm used to using all natural products like this. (BTW, Morrocco Method actually does give a little lather.)
So... what happened to the scalp problems I had? They went away immediately. Ever since I started using Morrocco Method, my hair has been so freakin' soft, shiny, and silky. It's extra gorgeous! My husband is amazed and loves touching my hair (he's always commenting on how soft it is). And, just this weekend, my mom commented on how pretty my hair was. For those of you who don't know the story... this is huge! She was bummed that I was no longer going to color my hair blond. And, it's been a tiny bit of tension between us since I started growing it out. But, oh my goodness, this weekend she mentioned on more than one occasion that she was amazed at how shiny, soft, and pretty it was. She admitted that she actually likes it.
I have the entire shampoo system (4 bottles of different shampoo that I rotate) and one conditioner called Chi Conditioner. That system alone is awesome. I also bought the oil and have used that twice, and I have the hair gel (that's been great, too!). I decided to give the two conditioning sprays a try so I recently bought the sample/travel conditioning kit. The first night I used one of the sprays (for volume) I washed my hair, sprayed the stuff in, and went to bed. I woke up and my hair had so much body it looked like Edward's in Twilight - ha ha!
The system isn't cheap, but it's so healthy for my hair and body that I can't imagine using anything else right now. Plus, I stretch it out. Since I don't wash my hair daily (more like 2-3 times a week), I don't use much of the product so it'll last awhile. I, do, however recommend getting a couple of the Chi Conditioners because obviously you'll run out of that quicker. If you want to try the system out first, you can buy the travel/sample shampoo kit and the travel/sample conditioning kit. I recommend signing up for their newsletter because they frequently offer specials and coupons.
Yes, I will eventually post some pics.

Thanks for the review! I'm going to go check this out! =)
Sounds like a great hair care line!!
Kristen,
Thank you for sharing this! I, too am preparing my body for a future baby, and also need to get healthy for myself as well. I am straddling the fence about the hair color thing. I was blonde as a child, but now it is this mouse-y color - not blonde, not brown, so I am not sure what I would do, as coloring it brown would still leave roots when it grows. Can henna be used during pregancy? I am glad that you have found such great hair products. I might try them as well...
I am totally going to check that site out. I plan on trying it out when I get some money in my pocket! :) Thanks for the review!
Thank you so much for this! I've had scalp issues ever since my daughter was born-- 3 years now! (had to be because of all the hormone changes)-- and I've been dying to find a shampoo that wouldn't make me itch like crazy. I've even tried going "no poo" but that only made it worse. I don't care how much this stuff costs... I have to have it!! Thank you again.
Oooh, the whole trial size starter kit is on sale, yeah! Thanks for the link, I can't wait to try it.
Have you tried Pureology? These are "vegan" products.
http://www.pureology.com/
I've used these with success for years.
Hi JMS Robertson,
Thanks for reading and commenting. From what I understand, henna is fine during pregnancy. Always check with your midwife or doctor but it should be fine... be sure to get a totally sustainable and pure henna.
Hi Lesley,
I really appreciate and love Pureology's efforts! I love that they're vegan.
But, I'm using products that are more pure than Pureology (haha, the name and that statement sound funny!). For ex: Terressentials or Morrocco Method. In particular, you can read general info about hair care products on Terressential's website which is where I learned about certain ingredients in "so called natural products" (their FAQ page in particular reads, "It is highly likely that your current shampoo, conditioner, hairspray or other styling product contains some type of petrochemical polymer - a PVP vinyl, acrylate, silicone, carbomer, or hydrolyzed synthetic protein (soy, wheat, oat) polymer - all of which add a coating to the hair to make damaged hair appear undamaged. These plastic polymers also glue broken hairs together." - So, one of the things I'm looking for is products that don't have hydrolyzed synthetic protein, which it sounds like Pureology probably does.
Three things...
1. You made me spit water on my computer screen when I laughed out loud, reading that you woke up with Edward hair.
2. You know me and the Moon... I am just loving Anthony Morrocco's Lunar Hair Chart! That's worth a visit to the site right there.
3. Can't wait to see the chocolate brown you. Pictures, please.
Sounds like something I want to try. Nothing better for self confidence than shinny, gorgeous hair!
can't wait to see the new pics!
Hi Kristen!
Always inspirational! Check out Nothing Nasty on www.nothingnasty.com. They don´t do hair products but they do skin care. I haven´t tried them myself yet but I will. They do trial sizes to!

Anna
Hi Kristen
I have been using Morrocco Method for a few years and I love the shampoos. After a little while you will detox and your hair might get rough for which they recommend the Zen Detox. I love the earthiness and smell. Their lunar chart rocks.

Fatma
HI Fatma,
Thanks for your comment. I'm thrilled that you're loving Morrocco Method as much as me!
My hair already went through detox by using the Terressentials for the past many months. I'll bet that's one reason why I had such immediate and beautiful results :)
Yay for Morrocco Method!
Kristen :)
Sounds like a fantastic way to look after your hair. I am using cruelty free products that are fairly chemical free but I will be on the look out for something like the MM here in Australia!
Hi there, Kristen.
For your future reference, there is some very helpful advice for dealing with buildup on the scalp that is covered in the Terressentials Hair Washing instructions -- specifically, #5 in the instructions -- at this link:
http://www.terressentials.com/hairhelp.html
The instructions recommend that people should, periodically (once or twice a month, or as often as desired), wash their hair with one of the Terressentials certified organic Body Washes and, importantly, follow the washing of the hair with the crucial final step: a final dilute organic vinegar and water rinse to dissolve and remove excessive minerals deposited on the hair from tap water, and/or excessive sebum buildup due to normal hormonal fluctuations or seasonal changes. (The instructions even includes a basic recipe for the vinegar and water rinse.)
In addition, Terressentials also recommends that if anyone ever experiences any buildup or flakiness that they should also temporarily switch/rotate to one of the two NON-moisturizing Pure Earth Hair Washes -- either the Fragrance-free or the Cool Mint formulas -- for a few weeks.
The combination of the special deep cleansing Body Wash treatment with the apple cider and water rinse, described above, is very refreshing and balancing for the scalp and designed to resolve the issue that you describe.
Naturally, one can also use the yummy Terressentials Body Wash for washing the body, too!
So, the Terressentials Hair Washing System as described in the Hair Wash instructions article above -- the Cool Mint Pure Earth Hair Wash, Lavender Garden or Cool Mint Body Wash (my favorites!) and an organic apple cider and water rinse -- is a very effective, VERY affordable, and authentically certified simple system of organic products!
Hi Connie,
Of course... I tried everything you suggested. My first response was to see what Terressentials recommended and I followed that protocol.
Unfortunately, it didn't help. :( I still plan on using Terressentials from time to time, after all, I have a couple of bottles still.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Cheers,
Kristen
hey girl, show us your roots!
I show mine all the time and lots of them are gray....

Hi Kristen,
Thanks so much for an awesome post! I love hearing when you experiment with products :)
I have a couple questions for you about using the Morrocco Method products. I like their shampoos, but would always get some sort of build-up from the products. When I comb through it, it looks like there is clay in my hair which comes off on the comb. I'm pretty sure my scalp has mostly detoxed--I shower once a week, and either use lemon juice or a natural shampoo (with just saponified oils)--so I don't think it's that. Perhaps I am using too much product, or it's not coming totally out of my hair. May I ask how much you use, and whether you follow the shampoos with something else to make sure all of the MM shampoo comes out of your hair? Do you dilute the shampoo with water before applying it to your hair?
THANKS SO MUCH!! Hugs :)
Hi Courtney,
Here is my experience:
I wash my hair more than once a week (2-3 times).
I only use Morrocco Method, nothing else. No lemon juice, no saponified shampoo.
I rotate the four shampoos.
I follow the shampoo with the Chi conditioner.
I do not dilute anything.
I shampoo twice and use a normal amount... not too little, not too much.
Hope that helps :)
Cheers,
Kristen
Kristen, thank you so much for this comment! I am very excited about starting to use these hair products! Absolutely love your log and what you are doing!)
Thanks, Kristen! You're the best :)
I will keep trying; maybe I'm just using too much, then.
Take care and hugs :)
now i really want to see how you look with brown hair! :-)
Its a very informative article. I hope that you will post more and thank you for sharing.
Being a curious person who loves trying new things, I got the starter kit and used one of the shampoos tonight, the Chi conditioner, and the leave in spray conditioner. It is odd getting used to no lather but I'm willing to give this a try as I LOVE the scents of these products. After a few days I'm sure I'll be used to no lather. I'm very curious to see how my hair transforms over time.
I appreciate what you wrote about Pureology. Their line is very foamy like other shampoos so I wonder how pure it can be. In any case, the Pureology is going in the fridge for now as I try the MM.
Just want to say I am very inspired by your "raw talent" and have bought three of your books, one on going raw, one on smoothies, and one on salads and dressings.
Hi Lesley,
It's definitely interesting (like the mud of Terressentials) - haha. But, my hair feels amazing. It's thick and shiny and I only have good things to say. Hope you enjoy it. Keep me posted with your experience. :)
Cheer,
Kristen
Hi again, Lesley,
Thank you for your support - hope you're enjoying the books :)
Cheers,
Kristen
Hi Kristen,
I know this is an older post to your blog but I have not had time to follow you lately as I have been working 60 hour work weeks!! I just wanted to let you know that I found a great all natural hair care and hair color line!!! I have been looking alot lately for something better than what I have been using as well. The website is www.shearmiracles.net and the owners are Don & Robyn. They have all natural hair shampoos and conditioners as well as an all natural hair color!!!!!!!! You could go back to your blond. This product is amazing and ALL natural. Give them a call and let me know your thoughts!!!
Thanks,
Samantha Cook
Hi Samantha,
Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. Here are my original thoughts w/o having checked their site yet:
1) It's hard to imagine something altering the color of my hair in taking it from dark to light w/o doing some harm or having some kind of chemical in it.
2) I am skeptical that even if it were totally plant based and all natural that it would ever get my hair to the light blond I used to do because my natural color is so dark.
When I used to color my hair it was always a battle getting just the right color of blond (light and no yellow or brassy color - was always hard to do and something I'm grateful not to be battling w/ anymore.
3) I LOVE my dark brown hair!
I tried checking the site but I couldn't load the page. I will look at it later so I can refer others to it, if it looks to be as safe as henna.
Thanks!
Kristen
Hi again,
I see they have an ingredient in most of their products "silk protein." I need to find out what that is... is it vegan? is it a kind of plastic? If I find out that it's neither of those, I'd be interested in trying it out someday.
Regarding hair color: they don't list the ingredients on the website (unless I didn't see them), so I can't say how safe or natural it is. And, I'm not sure you can just buy the color, rather you might need to go to their salon to get the treatment, which is out of the question - haha. Anyway, I'm loving my dark locks so I don't have any desire to lighten them. But, if anyone else out there tries it out, let us know. :)

Hi Kristen,
I'm a little late replying to your post, but I just stumbled across it recently while googling reviews of Morrocco Method products. Some of your comments resembled my own thoughts and experiences so closely that it was a little spooky. As it turns out, that was precisely what I needed to convince myself that spending the extra money for this hair care line would be worth it. I hope you don't mind if I share a brief (hopefully) recount of my hair troubles that led me to your blog.
I stopped using chemical-laden shampoos about two years ago and have since tried the all natural water only washing (not as bad as I thought it would be, but not right for me); baking soda and vinegar (it left my hair a bit lackluster even though it cleaned well); castile soap (too much build up – this one was very short-lived) and Terressentials hair wash.
Now, this is where the eerie resemblance between your experience and mine starts to come into play. Terressentials’ mud (for what else can it really be called) left my hair full and clean some days and sort of limp and waxy other days. Like you, I started getting flakes after a few months and as the bad hair days increased, I knew it was time for something different.
I considered getting something that was just “mostly” natural, but couldn’t bring myself to compromise. I already knew about Morrocco Method but the rave reviews combined with the informational gaps on their website left me feeling largely conflicted. I knew that many people who loved their products had similar complaints about the website or customer service, but it was your words that really clicked with me and gave me that extra push. Of course, I still had to justify the expense to myself with the reminder that I only wash my hair every 2-3 days. Affordable in the long run is still affordable. :)
I just washed my hair for the first time yesterday (with the Earth Essence) so I might be getting a little ahead of myself here, but I am thrilled with the results! The best part is that my hair seemed to look better and better as the day wore on. I can’t wait until it’s time to wash my hair again!
I also ordered a sample of their gel, partially because I’m curious about using natural styling products, but mostly with my Mom in mind because she struggles with finding a product that works for her. I offered the gel to her yesterday just as she was searching for something to help with her uncooperative hair; after trying it out she immediately asked me to share. :)
Thank you for sharing your experience and convincing me to give Morrocco Method a try!
Jenny
Hi Jenny!
Love your story and the eery resemblence. Let's be friends :)
thx for sharing. Hope MM continues to treat you well!!!

Dear Kristen: for a 100% Natural suggestion trying our MM Henna Marigold Blonde is perfect for sunstreaks and highlights naturally. Marigold blonde will turn any white or grey hair pale blonde. This is truly the magic formula for becoming a true blonde and perfectly color safe…….
We here at MM are most concerned with your health and your Scalp and Hair
J.M.S. Robertson-
Yes MM henna is perfectly safe for pregnancy and suggest doing the lightest shade at first and gradually going darker.
Again try our MM Marigold Henna for pale blonde highlights on any grey or white hairs. Its also a great conditioner.
It may take two to three applications to get the true color saturation. Follow instructions.
debbiedoesraw- suggest using our 100% Natural Organic PLANT BASED Henna for all health reasons.
Simply start with our neutral henna for a true conditioning effect and start with the lightest color first like Marigold Blonde or Light brown and see the amazing highlighted effect that turns any grey or white hairs into dramatic and natural shades of color. We here at MM are most concerned with your health and your Scalp and Hair
Courtney - YES suggest diluting our shampoos with spring natural water. Try 50/50 to start and shake well before using. Some clients with thick and or long hair prefer to dilute MM shampoo with water and get a easier rinse out that way.
Much Thanks for the wonderful review of Morrocco Method products!
