We Met Our Future Doula

It's been an exciting week so far. I've been assembling my future birthing team (found my midwife already) and this week we interviewed our future doula. I want to have as much planned and figured out as possible so that when I'm actually pregnant, I can just relax and focus on the health of my mind, body, and spirit. Anyway, back to my doula... she's AMAZING! We clicked immediately and I'm truly ecstatic to have her as a part of my birthing team.

What is a doula? Well, she's basically my helper for anything I need during birth. The word "doula" means "servant to women" so she'll be there to do everything she can do make me comfortable from massage to making sure I'm hydrated and fed to coaching and supporting us to running interference if anyone or anything is messing with my birthing flow (very important!) to helping me have the best and most safe birth experience I can.

What am I eating these days?
My goal is to get used to eating a little more than I usually do. I want to put on a couple of pounds to help facilitate getting pregnant and get used to eating more protein on a daily basis. For the past couple of months (and going forward), my HRAV food intake includes:

a)
1-2 quarts fresh organic green juice (I affectionately call it Plant Blood)

b) Organic
Hemp Green Smoothie (loaded up with all kinds of goodies for extra nutrition)
c)
Vitamineral Green Powder
d)
Fruits of the Earth Powder (and/or camu powder) every few days or so
e) Fresh fruit and salads

f) More Raw Vegan foods (for example: raw pasta, pesto, soup, crackers, etc) and/or low fat cooked vegan foods (for example: lentil soup, beans, sprouted bread with raw nut butter and jelly, hummus, red quinoa, cereal/raw hemp seed milk, etc).

g) I'm still taking my
Heavy Metal Nano Detox (will be done this week) and Pine's Wheat Grass (will take throughout pregnancy and beyond) daily
h) I'm done taking my ground milk thistle seeds to cleanse my liver

i) I've recently decided to add this
Vitamin B complex after much research and debate. I'd rather be safe than sorry and I can't guarantee to get enough B-vitamins with my foods alone. I don't want to stress about it either, that would wreak havoc on my body.
j) Women's Tea of nettle, alfalfa, and raspberry leaf daily (I want to add lemon balm, but
mountainroseherbs is out of stock right now).

Another thing I'm getting into my routine is taking a 2-3 mile walk every day no matter what. It's something I want to keep doing all through pregnancy so I'm getting into the habit for it now.

Broccoli - Fights Cancer Old School

Broccoli. There is so much to say about broccoli and her powers. She's mighty and strong and delicious and beautiful and oh-so-powerful. We all need broccoli in our life. While I'm not fighting cancer that I know of, I am certainly doing everything in my life to prevent it. And broccoli is in my arsenal of weapons for doing this.

Many of you think I'm doing the following amazing preparations for getting pregnant and think that's the main reason I'm changing so many things such as:

1) TRULY natural hair and body care products (
how do your products rate?)
2) Making my own home cleaning products (posting recipes I'm using soon)
3) No longer coloring my blond locks (
read more here)
4) My super healthy diet, and more

Yes, because I'm trying to get pregnant soon, I want to be as healthy as possible. But, that's not the only reason.

Some of you know I'm a regular contributor at Kris Carr's Crazy Sexy Life community (I've recently been honored as an Ambassador of the community - I'm so thrilled about that). Well, since contributing regularly in that super warm, amazing community, my eyes have been opened big time. You don't have to have cancer to be a part of that group because it's an overall wellness community, but many of the people there do have cancer. People my age. People just like me. People just like you. It's humbling and sad, yet empowering. I've concluded that I'm not leaving it up to my diet for preventing cancer. I'm not taking any chances... and why should I? (or why should you for that matter?) I'm doing everything I can to live as clean a life as possible, because the toxins in our environment are overwhelming (you know those products you "thought" were okay, well, some are still not safe -
read shocking info here). After spending time in Kris Carr's community and seeing so many people fight cancer, I'm maintaining my new EXTRA healthy and clean lifestyle for good, whether I conceive or not.

It's easy to do. There are so many terrific products (or ingredients to make your own) on the market that it's a no-brainer to me (for beauty, hair, cleaning, etc - I'll post my favorites soon!). And, Whoo-Whee, don't forget about all the good you're doing for the environment by making these better choices. Let me just tell you, I've never felt so proud... and so amazing, wonderful, pure, energized, and full of life.

Okay, so let's get back to one of the powerhouse cancer fighting and preventing staples in my life... broccoli. I love broccoli. I'll be honest, I'm not a raving fan of just eating it plain and raw. Those cute little trees are a little tough when they're in that form. But, I do enjoy it in the following ways:

1) Juice (I made
Broccoli Carrot Plant Blood today - serious deliciousness)
2) Smoothie (blended with bananas, apples, or mango)

3) Pureed Raw in a dish like
Flying Dragon Broccoli
4) Sprouts (more info on
HUGE sprout powers here)
5) Very gently steamed

To cook or not to cook?
I've read many things stating that broccoli should be steamed gently to release some of the nutrients. Of course, by steaming or cooking, you destroy many other nutrients as well. So, I do both. I'm keeping it balanced by enjoying it Raw in most cases (as well as having it lightly steamed on occasion). Here is a great article detailing the amazing cancer fighting benefits of Raw broccoli. Additionally, broccoli juice has been shown to decrease LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels.

Let's give broccoli (vegetable royalty), a huge applause for the following:
vitamin C, vitamin A, folic acid, calcium, chromium, fiber, potassium, magnesium, lutein, zeaxanthin, phosphorous
... just to name a few basics, but that's not all:

indoles and isothiocynates: Major cancer fighting players by neutralizing carcinogens - noted for helping prevent lung and esophageal cancers among others.

sulforaphane glucosinolate:
Sprouts have a far higher concentration of these than mature broccoli. Shown to stop the growth of breast and prostate cancer cells. Other studies show the growth of thyroid and goiter cancer cells to be slowed when treated with sulfur containing substances found in broccoli. They may also help prevent the growth of bacteria causing stomach ulcers.

indole-3-carbinol: Stimulator of detoxifying enzymes and shown to protect DNA.

So... got broccoli?

Bok Choy, Plums, And News To Peruse

I've taken my health to a new level. It seems hard to believe because anyone who knows me knows that I'm already so diligent and disciplined with respect to this. Eating HRAV (High Raw, All Vegan) has served me wonderfully. I love the variety, the flexibility, and the ease with which this lifestyle gives me. That being said, I was still able to kick it up a few notches now that I'm planning on getting pregnant in the near future. If you've read my past posts regarding the pregnancy topic, then you know that I'm covering my bases with nutrition, cleansing, etc (links below) to make sure I'm getting all of the vitamins I need for a future healthy pregnancy. It's not good enough to me to wait until I'm pregnant to make sure I'm doing all of that, I want to start now. One of the things I'm doing for this as part of my daily routine is drinking a lot of Plant Blood and green smoothies. I feel EXTRA AMAZING!

Today, I started my day with the most delicious organic plums (plums have vitamin C, A, B2, potassium and fiber). Then, I made a quart of cancer preventing Plant Blood, which consisted of bok choy, celery, and apple. Bok choy is a notable member of the cabbage family, although some say it's not really cabbage since it doesn't form a head. Some people even refer to it as Chinese chard. Either way, I love it. It's wonderful in salads because it has a watery crunch that is so refreshing. Today, however, I decided to juice it so I could get more of it into my diet (as happens when you juice your produce). I consider this recipe for Plant Blood to be
cancer preventing because bok choy is filled with indoles (cancer fighting compounds). Not only that, it's filled with calcium, potassium, and vitamin A. (Plus, it's super low in calories!)

Pineapple - A Tropical Beauty

I love pineapple. I love its sunshine colored, juicy flesh. I love the sweet aroma and the Hawaiian vacation it takes my mind to when I have it. Check out the recipe below... a tropical elixir that is like a vacation in a cup.

Fresh pineapple is available year round, but its peak season is from March to July. It can be used in smoothies, juiced (juice the core, too!), eaten fresh, used in desserts, salads, salsas, and more. Pineapple has vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese, copper, and digestive enzymes known as bromelain (a power house on many fronts). Cornell University showed that pineapple can reduce the formation of nitrosamines (potential carcinogens).
But that's not all! It's a great refresher for your skin. If I don't juice the core, I take it and rub it over my face and neck since it's great for removing dead skin cells and exfoliating.

Pineapple selecting tips: It's important to select a ripe pineapple when you're in the store because it's a fruit whose starch will not convert to sugar once it's off the plant.
~ Choose a pineapple that is slightly soft to the touch, with leaves that are green and crisp (no brown or yellow tips). Being able to gently pull out one of the leaves is usually a good indication of a juicy ripe pineapple. So, next time you're buying one, gently try to pick up the pineapple by pulling it off the display case by one leaf. If it doesn't come out, try a different leaf. If after a couple of tries a leaf doesn't come out... move on to another pineapple. Avoid pineapples with soft spots or bruises.

Pineapple Mango Colada

Yield 3-4 servings

1/2 pineapple, peeled and chopped
1 mango, peeled, pitted, and chopped (or 1 heaping cup frozen mango)
1 young Thai coconut, meat and water
1/2 teaspoon rum extract (more to taste!)
2 tablespoons raw agave nectar
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 cup ice cubes

Blend all of the ingredients together, except the ice. Add the ice and blend until desired texture achieved.

Raw Vegan Bananas Foster - OMG!

Today I'm enjoying one of my all-time favorite recipes. Every time (and I mean it... every time) I make this for friends, family, or a class... it's a huge hit.

Traditional Bananas Foster is one of my family's favorites desserts, so I was tasked with making a Raw Vegan version that would knock socks off. All I can say is that I delivered :)
This awesome recipe is available in both my print book and ebook, Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Desserts.

Fluffy Green Smoothie

One my favorite green smoothie recipes is simply apples, spinach and cinnamon. I love how the apples make it "fluffy" and the spinach adds a lovely creaminess to it. And, if you use red delicious apples (they're reported to have the highest levels of phytonutrients) then you get gorgeous little flecks of red swirling around as you drink.

We're going to a party tonight where I'm certain there won't be anything for me to eat. No problem though! And, certainly no complaints here. I'm simply going to tote along my Fluffy Green Smoothie to drink. (I love the conversation it starts anyway.)

Today's Raw Vegan Food (so far):

Heavy Metal Nano Detox
Pine's Wheat Grass Tablets
My Super Drink
(I chug it down)
1 cup water
1-2 T hemp protein powder for protein, essential fatty acids and fiber
1/4 t camu powder (or 1 T Fruits of the Earth) for extra Vitamin C and nutrients
1 T freshly ground milk thistle seeds to cleanse my liver
1 T ground flax or chia seeds for more essential fatty acids to convert to DHA (important for pregnancy)
1 heaping T
Vitamineral Green for more power greens
*The list above is pretty much how I've been starting every morning lately to help get my body ready for pregnancy.

Girly Sun Tea (alfalfa, nettle, raspberry leaf)
Fluffy Green Smoothie (1 1/2 cups water, 2 apples, 1/2 t cinnamon, 2 big handfuls spinach)
Fluffy Green Protein Smoothie
(same as above but I've added hemp protein powder and Vitamineral Green)
I will likely have chocolate at some point during the day :)

My Goal: Become A Centenarian

I can't believe I never thought about it until now, but with the passing of my boyfriend's amazing 94-year old grandpa, it's caused me to be a little extra thoughtful today. With my healthy lifestyle, my intent had always been to feel great in the short term and to fight the diseases bombarding our culture today: heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's, osteoporosis, etc, so that I could live a life feeling terrific physically, mentally and spiritually. My goals with respect to health and aging pretty much stopped there though. After all, isn't that a lot?

I've decided it's not enough. It dawned on me tonight that I want to live until I'm 100 years old. I want the honor of becoming a centenarian. How cool of a goal is that? With my enhanced mindset, I'm filled with new energy, and more hope and excitement than ever. When people question my lifestyle, you know the ones... those people who don't immediately "get it"... I am excited to respond with simply, "I want to become a centenarian and this is the best plan for accomplishing my goal."

As most of you reading my blog know, diet plays a key role, but it doesn't stop there. Physical fitness is crucial. And, let me be more specific... vigorous physical fitness is a more appropriate description. So, I'm off to take a late night jog under the stars.

On another note, tonight we watched Batman Begins again in preparation for the new Batman movie coming out this week, Dark Knight. And, what do ya know??? Alfred woke Bruce Wayne one morning with a Green Smoothie! Gosh, and to think that movie came out years ago. No wonder Batman has so much power!

AMA AGAINST HOMEBIRTH!

The American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology created a resolution AGAINST HOMEBIRTH, and they're discussing legislation to outlaw having your baby in the comfort of your own home. I'm frustrated on so many levels, smoke is practically coming out of my ears.

As a woman planning on getting pregnant and wanting a home birth... this is ridiculous and disappointing. Leave it to the "medical" doctors to do something like this out of fear for losing business. Maybe if they didn't treat having a baby as a disease and realized that it's a beautiful, natural process which merits respect and trust in a woman's body and intuition, we wouldn't feel the need to run from them.

Amazing Raw Chocolate Class

We had another amazing, sold-out class (Raw Chocolate) over the weekend. I had so much fun. In attendance were three teenagers, which I thought was really cool. Kudos to the parents who brought them. My mom had me giggling (along with the rest of the class) at her jokes... she never fails to get me in stitches of laughter. And, speaking of mom, we're back at her house for the entire week. Whoo-hoo! We're actually dog sitting her three dogs while she's out of town. So, my boyfriend and I will be having a mini-vacation with four dogs (we brought ours over). Apart from a funeral we have to attend in Tucson (my boyfriend's 94 year old grandpa passed away today), it'll be a week like usual at mom's (only, without her). We have a line up of dvds, we'll work away on our laptops (I'm working on two new ebooks), exercising is on the agenda, reading a book on breastfeeding as well as a book on living green, visiting with friends, and having fun.

A Nourishing Day In Spite Of Monsoon Clouds

Today in Arizona it's pretty cloudy (although I do see some sun peeking through the clouds). As it's monsoon season, it's common to have cloudy days as well as lots of storms at night. While I like the beautiful storms in the desert, I'm not a fan of cloudy days. This is because I grew up in Michigan where it's common to have gloomy and cloudy days... one of the reasons I moved to Arizona was for the sunshine.

So, today, with the gray clouds looming above, it felt like a day of nourishing for my mind, spirit, and body. Here's what I did:

Mind:

I put on yoga-type meditation music and started my day. Even though I was working away at the laptop, I was filled with peace, calm, and relaxation.

Spirit:

Danced with my dog. Yup, I danced with my dog which makes my heart soar. He's my bud!

Body:

I'm filling my body (as usual) with deliciously healthy food; and, in spite of the clouds, I feel vibrant, full of sunshine (must be from all of the chlorophyll-rich plants I eat), alive, and full of nourishing energy.

Today's Raw Food Plan:

Heavy Metal Nano Detox
Vitamineral Green - 1 heaping tablespoon in a cup of water, chugged down fast. This is now a ritual I look forward to, in spite of the extremely green taste. I feel so energized and buzzing with life when having this daily.
Pines Wheat Grass Tablets - I take the 1st serving of these with my cup of green powder noted above.
Plant Blood
-
cucumber, celery, dinosaur kale... I love love love Plant Blood. I love the way it feels going down my throat, esophagus, and into my tummy. You know how red wine can give you that warm feeling inside your body as it travels through you after a sip... well, it's similar for fresh Plant Blood for me, only it's invigorating, cooling, refreshing, and full of life.
Sauerkraut
- hhhmmm... talk about extra nourishment for my pregnancy planning bod!

Power
Hemp Shake - water, banana, apple, Vitamineral Green powder (1 tsp), Manitoba Harvest Hemp Protein Powder, and 1 tablespoon Milk Thistle Seeds.
Heavenly salad full of fresh ingredients
: home grown sprouts (broccoli and alfalfa), avocado, and radishes.
Plant Blood
- apple, dinosaur kale
If hungry later, I'll eat more sauerkraut along with fresh veggies

Avocado & Prunes In A Kickin' Raw Vegan Dressing

I made a kickin' dressing for my salad. I say "kickin'" because it has a little spicy kick to it. And, would you believe that this dressing has prunes in it? Personally, I don't think prunes get the respect they deserve so I'm determined to change that. I use them in dressings, desserts, chopped up on my salads, and just snack on them plain. I love them because they're not "too" sweet. Step over dates, it's time for something a little less sweet. Prunes (a dried European plum) have an impressive nutrient profile (one source I found claimed that prunes have more antioxidant activity than any other fruit... more than twice the antioxidant capacity or blueberries!).

The Goods On Prunes:
High in fiber (constipation is not the sexiest topic, but hey, fiber helps reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, among other things, and THAT is sexy!)

Vitamin A

Vitamin C

Potassium (helps maintain normal blood pressure and heart function)

Iron (better absorbed due to the vitamin C in prunes)

Loads of antioxidants (notably neochlorogenic acid and chlorogenic acid)

And much more

Creamy Kickin' Dressing

Yield 2 cups

2/3 cup water, or more

1 avocado, pitted and peeled
(an amazing, nutrient-packed whole food)
2 prunes

juice of 1 lemon

1 tablespoon Mexican Seasoning

1/2 teaspoon
Himalayan crystal salt
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Blend until creamy and enjoy this thick, creamy and kickin' dressing over your next salad or with chopped veggies. It's sooooo good!

Refreshing Cucumber Blood

I have been juicing a lot this week and I love it. I've been making deliciously light and refreshing plant blood with a base of cucumber blood. I love cucumbers, they're right up there with watermelon in my book.

If I don't have my green smoothie tucked away in my purse when I go to the movie theater, I often bring this green-skinned fruit whole and eat it just like a carrot or stalk of celery. If people look at me like I just came off the mother ship, I respond with "hhhmmmm, aaahhhhhh, this is so refreshing and delicious!"

The Good On Cucumbers:
Hydrating and cooling because of the high water content

Contains fiber, silica (great for radiant skin), potassium, magnesium
, and vitamin C
*
Not only are they loaded with nutrients, but you can use cucumber slices topically on your closed eyes to reduce swelling, as well as for burns and dermatitis.

So, whether you're eating your cucumber in a salad or juicing its blood for a refreshing drink... remember that you'll be "cool as a cucumber" when you do :)

Starlight: My Transformation

Okay, not to gush too romantic, but I just had to share. As many of you know, I've begun cleaning out every possible source of toxin in my world, in order to create an ideal body and environment for getting pregnant. I just switched to all organic bedding, had my amalgam fillings removed, threw out chemical-laden cosmetics, and so on. I've now come face-to-face with the most challenging change yet -- don't laugh, but it's my hair color!

The world has not known my true color since I was, seriously, eleven years old. I've been blonde so long that it has been inseparable with my self-identity. But no more. That's right, I'm going all natural in the hair department. Not only are the harsh chemicals for color-treating hair potential toxins for pregnant and nursing mothers, but -- more significantly -- those same chemicals do so much damage to hair that you must use even more chemicals (
plastics, basically) to make color-treated hair soft and silky. That's right, I have blonde, plastic hair!

So as a big part of my going green, I'm officially going brown! haha! I'm attacking the blonde from both ends, growing out my natural color, but also cutting my hair shorter to hasten the awkward transition period (I opted to go two-tone for a few months rather than dye my hair brunette and grow out naturally from there.) As my first step, I just had over 4 inches cut off, and got bangs for the first time since I was a kid. (Click on the image to view full size.)

Here's the romantic part. My amazing boyfriend, so full of love and support for this process, surprised me by staying up all night and creating this portrait of me, titled "Starlight," which he calls "a tribute to my evolving spirit and inner goddess." Whoa. Who says stuff like that!? It absolutely melted my heart when I saw it! (He's the bomb.)

It was inspired by equal parts space-travel beach scene from Contact (the movie) and Starlight, the wonderfully intense, uplifting, romantic song by his favorite band, Muse --
listen here, the lyrics really say it all, simply beautiful.

So here you go, blonde hair, your last big HURRAH! The transformation has officially begun!

Pregnancy Prep: Remove Amalgam Fillings...Check!

On Monday I had my amalgam fillings removed because the mercury that amalgam fillings release can be a dangerous toxin for a fetus. Moreover, dental amalgams are a source of mercury that can be found in breast milk. Yikes! I'm not taking any chances... so, out they went.

Now, I really like my dentist, and going to the dentist (in general) has never been my favorite thing to do. You know how public speaking is the number one fear for most people? Well, that's a piece of cake (Raw Vegan) for me. Going to the dentist...well, that's another story. As a result, even though I'm confident in my dentist's abilities and modern equipment, I'm now taking extra precautions and kicking up my detox a bit
