Plant Blood All Day Long...Yowza, I Feel Great!

Today, I made a mother of a Plant Blood (my name for juice). Here is what it was and it kept me high on juice all day long (made about 3 quarts):

1-2 cups water
3 cups fresh, home grown sprouts
2 red delicious apples*
1/2 bunch celery
1 red bell pepper
2 cucumbers**
4 large rainbow chard leaves
4 large curly kale leaves***
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice****
juice from 2 oranges****

* This variety is reported to have the highest level of phytonutrients!
** Great for your skin!
*** Potent cancer fighting antioxidants in these babies!
**** Say "hello" to Vitamin C!

I used my Blendtec blender (the best high-powered blender on the market in my opinion) to liquefy my produce. Then, I strained it through a nutmilk bag into a large bowl, and transferred it to three glass mason jars (I filled them to the tippy top to reduce oxidation). I savored them all day long. Yowza! This plant blood was loaded with so many powerful nutrients. It rocked!

Still Purging @ Home, Oprah's Update, Weekend!

I'm still going through my home and purging things. It feels so great and liberating. Stuff I considered keeping for a while longer just two days ago, I'm already excited to give away now.

Today, we went to Staples to get ink for my printer, and ordinarily I'd get a little excited to be there (I love organizational stuff like post-it notes, markers, colored folders, etc), but today I was rather turned off. I wanted to get in, get my ink, and get out. I wanted nothing to do with buying anything I didn't really need. I'm impressed at how our mindset can change quickly once we're on a path. I worked so hard to clean my home, declutter it, etc over the past week...the last thing I was going to do was fill it up with stuff I didn't need.

To further hit home the point, we watched a great documentary, A Crude Awakening. It's about the oil crisis, how dependent various cultures around the world are on it, and what we need to think about going forward. People need to realize that just by driving less or getting a Prius car are NOT the only things we can do to help lighten our footprint when it comes to oil consumption. It reaches into every purchase we make, whether the oil was used to make the product or deliver it. It's scary. But, if we all start making some major changes NOW (like I wrote about in yesterday's blog: consuming less and teaching our kids these values while we're at it), then we might have a chance. So, let's get started! Join me and let's consume less and love it. Be happy and feel empowered with fewer things. Make smart purchase decisions. It's easy!

Oprah update: Whoo-hoo, I'm happy to report that Oprah is still rockin' it out vegan style. I love that!

A Goal For Simplicity - Declutter, Owning Time & Being Green

I have a long-term goal of living a more simple life, which is a far cry from where I was in my mid-twenties. When I was in the corporate world, my boss owned my time. And, since I didn't own my time, I felt compelled to own things. I looked to my possessions to define me and represent who I was. The cycle was: get paid more, work more, buy more.

Then, some years ago, I heard the saying, "The things you own end up owning you." My buying behavior came into perspective and I found myself buying fewer things, because I didn't like the idea of being owned by my possessions (it was bad enough being owned by my boss - haha). It didn't take long before I realized that I yearned to own my time, not material objects, and that I longed for a more simple life. (Here is a very cool story regarding stuff that further strengthened my resolve.)

I've been successful at reducing my consumer footprint, and I'm happy with the results. I know what I'm doing is healthy for my soul and for the earth. It didn't happen overnight, and it took some getting used to. Now, when I think about making a purchase, whether it's food, clothing, kitchen equipment, books, electronics, etc, I take the time to think through the following: 1) Do I really need it? 2) Do I really want it? 3) Can I wait 2-weeks and then decide whether to buy it? 4) What resources and energy went into making this product and what am I doing to the earth by consuming it? After going through those questions, I have found that in most cases, I'm eager to say "no" and happy as a result.

Fast forward to today: I still have a lot of things from my previous lifestyle and it became apparent that it was time to declutter my home by cleaning, purging, recycling and throwing many of them away. The quote I reference earlier about "...things owning you" has taken on new life for me. I always thought about it with respect to monetary issues (buy fewer things, fewer things own me). Now, it goes beyond that, because possessions not only cost money, but they also cost time, the thing I'm anxious to own. This became apparent when I started thinking about how hard it is to keep my home clean. Why? Because I own too much shit. Hence, I have too much to dust. Couple that with the fact that I live in the desert with a dog that sheds, and I have a recipe for dust-covered objects. I pretty much have to thoroughly clean every couple of days, or when that Arizona sun comes streaming through my windows it can be a gross site when I see all the dust floating through the air. I immediately think, "Oh boy, that's either going to end up on my floor, bed, table, etc, or I'm breathing it in. Ick!" Bottom line, I was spending too much of my precious time cleaning and wanted to figure out a way to reduce that. Answer: Have fewer things to dust.

Therefore, I decided to declutter and clean my home - purge style. I spent a couple of days going from top to bottom, under beds, through closets/cupboards, etc and created a HUGE pile of stuff to recycle, give to Goodwill, and throw out. It felt so good, cleansing, and liberating.

Considering the future: As many of you know, we're doing some family planning, and we're definitely interested in homeschooling. Apart from the obvious benefit our kids will experience from it, we also want to travel the world with them during these childhood years (even living abroad part of it). This requires packing and moving. When the time comes (whether it's sooner or later), I want to be able to put as few things into storage as possible, making it quick and easy to pack up and go. When I think about possessions in that perspective, it quickly becomes apparent that if I haven't used it within the past year, odds are that I don't need it and someone else might get better use out of it than me (time to recycle). "This house is clean."

Saturday At Whole Foods, Exercise & Photo Shoot

Whole Foods: This Saturday (May 31, 11:00am-1:30pm), I'll be at the new Whole Foods (Mayo Blvd/Scottsdale Rd - off the 101). I'm featuring my Moroccan Gazpacho recipe, so if you haven't had it, then stop by and try some. And, if you have had it, then stop by anyway and say hi :)

Exercise: I'll work on my chest and triceps (straight sets, high weight-low reps), and jump rope between sets.

Photo shoot: I'm also busy today with a photo shoot which is going to be fun! I can't wait to get all gussied up, hair done, etc. I love being a girl!

My Childbirth Research

Currently, I'm reading: Ina May's Guide To Childbirth, by Ina May Gaskin

I wrote recently about researching my options with respect to having a baby because it's something we're going to be
working on in the not-so-distant future. Hence, I'm researching everything involved. I just finished reading Good Nights, which discusses co-sleeping, and is something we'll be doing (Pierce Brosnan does it, along with many other stars). I think after anyone does research on this topic they'll quickly find how wonderful this is for both parents and baby. Seriously, great stuff in that book.

Ina May's Guide To Childbirth...I'm excited to read this book because it promises to be filled with loads of terrific information. I want to share one of the impressive endorsements on the back of her book: "Simply put, midwife Ina May Gaskin is the most important person in maternity care in North America, bar none. Plant Blood Rocks My World

I can't imagine my HRAV (high raw, all vegan) life without fresh Plant Blood. With each sip I feel energized, cleansed, rejuvenated, empowered, fueled, and full of life. Plant Blood is what I call any fresh juice made from plants and following is a recipe that rocks my world.

Plant Blood
Yield 2 quarts
1 cup water
2 cucumbers
1 bunch celery
1 bunch parsley
2 apples

Blend all of the ingredients in a blender and strain out the juice, using a nutmilk bag, into a large bowl. Or, use a juicer, such as the GreenStar to make your Plant Blood. Because I like to make extra, I store my Plant Blood in a glass mason jar, using a FoodSaver to keep it as fresh as possible until I want to drink it later in the day. Enjoy!

Long Weekend...Nice!

We're spending a nice long weekend at mom's. We love coming over here because we basically get to go on a mini-vacation (even though it's only about 45 min away). It's usually time spent watching movies on the couch, laptop nearby for surfing the web, munching on all kinds of yummy snacks, playing with the four dogs (we bring our dog for the little mini-break too), and just relaxing. Today was special because we celebrated my step-dad's birthday, and can you guess what movie we voted to take my parents to? You probably won't believe it...well, maybe you will. We saw Iron Man. It was our 4th time. I tell ya, I just am not tired of it, clearly.

Tomorrow we're going to eat watermelon, read, and spend some time at the pool if the weather is nice (it's been rather icky and cold here lately).

Well, I'm gettin' a little hungry, so I'm off to the kitchen to find something to munch on.

Kohlrabi Nasty Green Smoothie

If you are following me on twitter then you know that I scored some organic kohlrabi the other day. I made a smoothie with it and thought I'd share the recipe with you, but you might not want to make it. Although eating different kinds of produce is important to ensure a balanced diet of well-rounded nutrition, sometimes I'm tempted to put my foot down and say, "no." There should be some reward for choking down something that doesn't taste good (let's be honest: nasty), apart from the nutrients I'm getting. Perhaps I'll get some cool super-powers as a result. A girl can dream, right?

So, I'm already imagining ways to improve the smoothie...for starters, leave the kohlrabi out (haha). Hey! Maybe the smoothie is giving me comedic powers or maybe I'm just getting the giggles and laughing at myself.

Reasons to add Kohlrabi to your life: It's from the cabbage family and can be eaten as crudite or blended into a smoothie, like I did today. All parts of it are game for eating (bulb, stem and leaves). Kohlrabi is low in calories, loaded with cancer fighting phytonutrients, vitamin C & potassium, and packed with fiber.

Kohlrabi Nasty Green Smoothie
Yield: too much

1 1/2 cups water
1 kohlrabi (bulb, stem and leaves)
2 red delicious apples (this variety has the most phytos)
2 tablespoons fresh basil
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Blend it up, choke it down.

Seeing as I have another bulb to force down my throat (and my boyfriend's), I'm going to make our next kohlrabi smoothie sweeter with bananas (or I'm going to chop it up for our salads).

Oprah Goes Vegan For 21-Days! Hip-Hip-Hooray!

If you didn't know, Oprah committed to going VEGAN for 21-days. I'm stoked! I'm elated! I'm so happy for her and the animals that have been saved as a result. Follow her blog for more details. Ginger Spiced Wheatgrass - YOWZA!

I miss my former espresso days using my cute demitasse cups, so I'm giving them new life by drinking my wheatgrass from them. Isn't it adorable? Only, I wanted to create a fun alternative to plain wheatgrass, because this never was my favorite beverage (I usually make faces while swallowing it). The verdict? This recipe is fantastically fun! And, it's potent - Yowza! This little concoction will definitely put some "hip in your hop!"

Wheatgrass rocks because it's loaded with nutrients and is one of the best ways to help alkalize your body. Ginger is the queen of spices and worthy of much adoration (garlic is king, by the way) because it helps with nausea (which can occur with some people after having plain wheatgrass, myself included), boosts circulation and is filled with antioxidants. The spicy Serrano pepper (or habanero) adds heat and fun (like espresso, only a different kind of heat- haha). Read amazing things about hot peppers here.

Smartest Animals

One of my biggest passions (if not the biggest) is animals, so I'm always stoked when I see an article like this: Smartest Animals. I hope you enjoy this quick article as much as I did. Personally, I'm in awe of animals and filled with so much respect for them. How could you not be? They're just so damn cool!

This is a picture of my dog here (isn't he gorgeous?). I was raised with always having at least one dog running around (sometimes up to three of them!), so it only seemed fitting that I'd get my own when I moved out. I've had my dog for about eight years now, and he is truly my buddy. I figured a picture of him was appropriate for this post - he is a smarty!

I'd love to have a pig as a pet, too...but all in due time. I envision myself someday living in a home with plenty of land, where I can grow some of my own food, and have all kinds of animals running around (horses, pigs, bunnies, dogs, etc).

Fat Free Strawberry Ginger Dressing - Lovely and Fresh!

Yesterday's class was a major success and so much fun. I've already received multiple emails from students telling how much they loved it, and how eager they are for July's class (check out the goods here...it's going to be amazing - one of my best ever!).

Here is a deliciously fresh dressing to make as a staple in your household this summer. It's light, fat-free (yay, put extra on!), and is going to add a little pep in your step with the sassy ginger kick in it. It pairs wonderfully with a spinach-based salad (spring mix greens are a touch too bitter and romaine lettuce is a little too heavy, which detracts from the lovely lightness of it).

Fat Free Strawberry Ginger Dressing
Yield 1 cup

1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries, destemmed and diced
Juice from 1 orange
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and grated
2 teaspoons raw agave nectar
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1/4 teaspoon Himalayan crystal salt

Blend all of the ingredients together until smooth. Enjoy!

Is Muscle Growth Better With A Raw Vegan Diet?

Here is the gist of a question I was asked recently:
One of the big questions I've had in transitioning to raw is whether I'd be able to work out as strenuously as I had before and whether my results would be slower, faster, etc, etc. What has your experience been? What is your experience/opinion on muscle growth on a raw food diet?


Basically, here is my take:
For those of you who don't know, I used to be a competitive bodybuilder in my early twenties. I repeat, I was a bodybuilder (not a fitness gal, rather a hardcore, natural bodybuilder). This was PRE-Vegan, PRE-Raw.

It's very hard to make a true comparison for my ability to gain muscle because I'm simply not comparing apples to apples. More than just my diet has changed over the past 10-years, which could contribute to different levels of muscle growth.

Age: Does This Make A Difference?
I was younger back then, and some say it's easier to grow muscle as you age into your 30s, while others claim it's easier the younger you are. Either way, it's a contributing factor that doesn't relate to diet.

Experience & Technique:
I'm more experienced in the gym now so my form and technique are better. This could enhance muscle growth and isn't related to the food I consume.

Sleep: Big Difference And It's Important!
Sleep (quality and quantity) is crucial for anyone in training. When you stress your body in trying to grow muscle, it's critical to get extra rest and quality sleep. Muscle growth demands a lot from our bodies, and the major repairs from a heavy workout are typically taken care of while we sleep. This is something I didn't do well in my bodybuilding days. Between going to college full-time and competing with a hectic schedule, I was short on sleep and rarely let my body rest. That's different for me now. My lifestyle today (healthy diet, lighter daily schedule, etc) allows me to get plenty of sleep and rest. Furthermore, the quality of my sleep is so much better as a result of my diet. I used to toss and turn all night, because my body was busy trying to detox all the crap I was ingesting. Today, I sleep like a baby. Because of this, I feel my time in the gym is rewarded with better progress than it was ten years ago.

Nutrients vs Stimulants
This goes hand-in-hand a little with the topic of sleep. When I was bodybuilding, I consumed massive amounts of coffee and other stimulating, over-the-counter pills for energy, diuretics, and even some laxatives (to move all the protein I was eating through me). Because of this, the quality of my sleep was extremely poor.

Recovery: Faster and Better
Again, this relates to sleep and rest. One of the major improvements I've noticed since eating an Extra-High-Raw, All-Vegan diet is my recovery is faster. Therefore, the frequency and quality of my training increases and this supports muscle growth.

Attitude: Super-Powers Anyone?
When I eat as healthy as I do, I can't help but feel like a super-hero. My mental outlook and attitude are those of feeling Strong, Empowered, Bad-Ass, and Unstoppable. This is important when I'm in the gym because it helps me get in that additional rep, and gives me that extra oompf to lift heavier.

My Conclusion:
Although it's hard to get an accurate take as to whether my muscle growth is better today because of my diet, I'd like to think it is. I can't say for sure because there are many things that have changed in my life which could impact my ability to grow muscle. However, I feel so much healthier, look healthier, sleep better, recover faster, etc. So, all in all, I'd say there is probably improvement. That being said, I don't find myself in the same camp as some people who claim they're gaining more muscle, at an accelerated rate, with a Raw diet. But, as I always say, everyone is different so it's hard to compare yourself to others.

Juicing Sprouts Gives Me Extra Energy

Today's juice is definitely kick-ass as far as nutrients go because I filled it with home-grown fresh sprouts. I'm feeling extra energized and strong after drinking just 1/2 a glass, and looking forward to going to the gym later this afternoon to work off some of this energy...and, speaking of working out, I received a great question on my blog yesterday about my feelings toward muscle /physical fitness in comparing my pre-raw-vegan days to now (Extra-High-Raw, All-Vegan). I plan on addressing this in a post in the next few days, because I do have some thoughts to share.

Sproutin' Kick Ass Green Juice
Yield 2 quarts

2 cups water
4 cups sprouts
juice of 2 lemons
juice of 2 oranges
5 big radishes
2 golden delicious apples
1 bunch parsley
1 bunch celery
1 cucumber

Blend all of the ingredients (might take two batches in the blender to get it all done) and strain into a large bowl using a nutmilk bag.

Today's workout
Legs (3 straight sets, 15 reps)
Walking lunges with dumbbells
Single leg squat with dumbbells
Wall sit (60 seconds in length, 3X, with 60 second rest between sets)

Cardio
Nice long walk to stretch my leg muscles

Baby Mama Movie & Raw Vegan Restaurant

I went and saw the movie Baby Mama last night (very funny), and guess what? They eat at a Raw Vegan restaurant (or at least they "try"). Only problem is that I can't truly write about it because I went to the bathroom during the majority of the scene! WHO KNEW??? - haha! Apparently, it's not the most glowing example of a Raw Vegan restaurant, but hey, I'm still stoked that they included it.

Sadly, I'm all out of Organic watermelon :( I'll stock up when I go to Whole Foods tomorrow, though :)

Watermelon - Be Still My Heart!

Anyone who knows me, knows that my all time favorite Raw food is, quite simply, organic watermelon. The gorgeously pink, sweet, refreshing flesh calls my name every summer and I just can't ever seem to get enough. Each year, as the watermelon season ends, I want to shed a tear because I'm already eagerly anticipating the new season, when watermelon will again usher more sunshine to my life. I love watermelon.

Now that it's back, you can count on me eating a LOT of it. For example, today, I have eaten nothing but watermelon. Yep, that's right. (Talk about easy...those of you saying Raw food prep is hard - whatevah!) I carved up a BUNCH and enjoyed it for my breakfast, snack, and lunch so far. I'm going to have a huge fresh green juice in a moment, then I'll probably have watermelon for dinner and dessert. If I choose something else for dinner, that's okay, because come sunrise (okay, let's be serious, I won't be up at sunrise) but come tomorrow, I'll be eating it for breakfast, snack, and lunch.

Watermelon rocks my world because it's alkalizing, low-calorie, refreshing, cleansing & detoxifying, cooling on the body (seriously, who needs air conditioning when you can eat watermelon), and contains lycopene (all you cooked tomato eaters out there searching for lycopene, get it in your watermelon!).

But that's not all watermelon offers...it's loaded with Vitamin A and has a low glycemic load. Furthermore, because of its extremely hydrating nature (it's 92% water), it's known as a "high-volume" food (takes up a lot of space without a lot of calories...this is helpful for those looking to lose weight). Some people even go on a watermelon fast, because it's so detoxifying and cleansing. Sounds good to me!

Many enjoy blending their watermelon into a smoothie and adding a little of the rind to it. That's great! According to David Grotto, author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life, watermelon rind contains citrulline, an amino acid that promotes nitric oxide production, improving blood flow through the arteries.

Delicious Sassy Treat: Blend the watermelon flesh and freeze in ice cube trays. This makes for one sassy glass of water with the pink cubes in it!

Warning: As far as food combining goes, I'm not known to be militant, although I am mindful of them. However, there is one that I take as gospel and that's to eat melons alone. So, when I eat watermelon, I only eat watermelon and nothing else with it (for at least a 1/2 hour after taking the last bite of watermelon). It digests super fast, so I don't have to wait long before eating other foods. And, if I've already eaten a meal (especially one that contained fat), then I wait at least a couple of hours before eating watermelon.

My workout: I'm heading to the gym in a short while (I'm receiving loads of emails asking me to post my workout routine). I'm bringing a bottle of fresh watermelon smoothie to drink (watermelon blended, that's it).

Today I'll be working on Chest and Triceps, straight sets, 8 reps/set:

I'll also do a little cardio on the treadmill.

Iron Man - Again?

Yep...I saw it for a third time - it's so good! We took my boyfriend's mom to see it and she really liked it, too. Come to find out, my boyfriend knows the guy who designed Iron Man's suit in the movie (as well as some other things). Isn't that cool?

As for other things I've been doing lately - preparing for next weekend's class, Easy Raw Vegan Desserts. I love creating and testing recipes for classes, especially dessert classes! Yum! As for my most recent activities, I'm currently sitting in bed with my laptop, answering emails, watching TV, drinking a big, fresh green juice, and just hanging out. Happy Mom's Day to all the moms out there.

Kristen Suzanne - A Future Mom

No, it's not anytime real soon - so don't get too excited (although I must admit I'm very excited at the idea of it in the future!). However, here are some things I'm researching to get prepared.

1) Having the birth at home with a midwife
I was introduced to this idea after reading a phenomenal book by John Robbins, Reclaiming Our Health (I highly recommend this book, it'll blow you away). Since then, I saw The Business of Being Born (available through Netflix) and my resolve intensified greatly to give birth at home (or in the very least by using a birth center).

2) Insurance doesn't cover maternity
WTF? This is something I didn't know until recently. The good news is that having a home birth is supposed to be less expensive than a hospital.

3) Circumcision
Last year I saw a Penn & Teller
: Bullshit show (it aired on Showtime, but I watched it online. It appears to have been taken down though). Their premiere episode, Circumcision, was a fascinating, yet comical at times, investigation into the controversial medical procedure that gets people asking, "to snip or not to snip?" It might not be so crazy to say "no" to this procedure anymore. Thus, the days of a boy feeling weird in the locker room are probably not going to be much of an issue in the future, if people continue to elect not to have the procedure done to their sons.

4) To Vaccinate or Not To Vaccinate
I saw an episode of Larry King Live with Jennifer McCarthy and
she talked about her concern over the fact that in the recent years we've added so many new vaccinations and the speed to which we schedule them could be extremely harmful, with the possibility of being linked to autism.

5) Homeschooling - A Smart Microtrend
Homeschooling has become a microtrend in itself (just like veganism). It's exciting to see this option gaining popularity with people taking their children's education into their own hands to make it the best possible. In a time when... 1) more people are working from home, 2) amazing technology like the Internet makes this easy to do, and 3) families are growing tired of our shitty educational system...this is no longer a "fringe" lifestyle.

In fact, I was amazed a few months back, while teaching a Raw food class, when the topic came up and I had a handful of Scottsdale moms (all very normal, well-to-do ladies) who homeschool their kids - and they didn't even know each other! I say "Scottsdale Moms" and describe them as such, because there was a time when homeschooling was associated with either bible-thumpers or granola-backpacking-barefoot-tree-huggers. On the contrary, these women, and their families, are far from that.

As far as our teaching skills...well, my man is wicked smart with an MBA from Wharton (he's brilliant), a mind like a steel-trap (he remembers everything he reads and hears), and he has the patience of a monk (he's going to be such a good dad). Me? Well, I'm college educated myself (University of Michigan), I'm resourceful and well-versed in many subjects, I'm super fun, I have the time to dedicate, and I can make a mean-green-smoothie! We feel like we'll do a world of good for our kids if we homeschool.

6) Breastfeeding - I know I'll do it...but for how long?
It's my understanding that some women in the United States do this for the first 6-12 months typically. Yet, in other parts of the world, they breastfeed for at least a few years.

7) The Diet!
Of course, my children will be living a High-Raw-All-Vegan lifestyle. The concern can be with letting other people babysit (family, friends). I've experienced, first hand, people making food for me, and thinking it follows along with my lifestyle, only to find out there was an ingredient included which wasn't vegan. Oops.

I will end with one of my favorite quotes because, although some of the practices mentioned in this post can seem foreign to many, I can't help but think that they feel very natural to me. I love what Gandhi said, Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Today's Great Recipe: Creamy Zinger Garlic Spread

Today, I'm sharing with you another great recipe - this time it's a delicious cheese spread perfect for crunchy crackers, fresh veggies, or adding a tablespoon (or two) to your next salad dressing to sass it up with a delightful gourmet flavor. In my last email newsletter (sign up here), I gave you a fabulously popular soup recipe of mine featuring Garlic Red Pepper Miso (soy-free). Well, if you bought a jar to make the soup, I wanted to give you another recipe in which to use it. This is quick, delicious, and versatile. Enjoy!

Creamy Zinger Garlic Spread
Yield 1 1/2 cups

1 cup cashews, macadamia or pine nuts (or a mix) soaked 1-hour, drained, rinsed
1 large clove garlic
1 tablespoon Garlic Red Pepper Miso
1 tablespoon light miso
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon extra virgin coconut oil
a little water, if needed to help blend

Blend all of the ingredients until creamy in your blender (or food processor) and enjoy this gourmet-flavored deliciousness. Creamy Zinger Garlic Spread will stay fresh for up to five days in your refrigerator (stored in an airtight container). It also freezes great.

*GREAT TIP - For those watching your nut intake, here is a tip for reducing the fat in spreads such as this, without compromising the exquisite experience. Replace half of the nuts with 1-2 zucchini (peeled). Keep in mind that fat helps mellow flavors, so by reducing the fat, you might need to reduce a few of the more "flavorful" ingredients. For example, I'd start with 1/2 tablespoon of each of the miso(s) and look for a clove of garlic that isn't too big. Start small because you can always add more, if desired.

Iron Man Drinking a Green Smoothie: BOOH-YAH!

I'm a blogging queen lately...you have to check in a couple of times a day just to keep up with me - haha :)

I just saw the movie, Iron Man, for the second time - yup, you could say I loved it! It's received many (deserved!) rave reviews. If you haven't seen it, then you're missing out on a non-stop adventure of action, fun, and excitement. Both times the audience had moments of laughing out loud, clapping, or exclaimed "Yeah(s)!"

And, total kudos to Robert Downey, Jr., Iron Man, drinking a green smoothie. I was stoked when I saw that!

Blissed Out Running & Chocolate Runner's Smoothie

I've been doing extra running on the treadmill lately. In the past, a typical cardio session would include me switching back and forth between running on the zero incline and walking fast on a very high incline (not usually running for longer than a few minutes at a time). Basically, because I find it pretty damn hard to run. I always have.

Lately, however, I'm finding myself running for minutes and minutes on end. And, it was during one of these recent episodes of "continued" running, that I found myself totally blissed out, unaware of the time passing or the music flowing into my ears from the headphones connected to my nano. Interestingly, the trick was that I started looking at things as if I were seeing them for the first time. I pretended I was a child looking around the gym and experiencing simple objects and activities anew.

Can you imagine what it's like looking at something as if you'd never seen it before...like the ceiling fan, the weights, someone working out, the mirrors on the wall, the cables coming down from the ceiling holding a platform suspended in the air that the TVs set on...it's kind of weird and and cool at the same time. The first time I did this, I realized that about 15 minutes had gone by with me still running. My body was working hard, my breathing was labored, and I was starting to drip sweat, but I had this amazing level of sustained energy coursing through me, pushing me another step. I loved it!


You see, normally, I need to have some really great music on to keep me pumped up in the gym, or at the very least, I need be reading an intriguing magazine while doing some cardio (unless I'm on my rebounder!). But, it seems this isn't the case anymore because I'm finding neat ways to engage my mind while getting my heart rate up in the gym.


Clearly, after such a superb workout (as described above), my body screams for fuel, and I'm happy to deliver (so easy to do when you live a High Raw, All Vegan Lifestyle such as mine). Here is my newest smoothie, Blissed Out Chocolate Runner's Smoothie. I've been enjoying these post-workout...fantastic and delicious.


Blissed Out Chocolate Runner's Smoothie

Yield approximately 4 cups

1-2 cups water

2 bananas
1 1/2 cups blueberries
1 1/2 cups spinach
3 tablespoons Chia Seeds
2 tablespoons Hemp Protein Powder
2 tablespoons Raw Chocolate Powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (of course!)
1-2 cups ice, optional, but especially refreshing after getting hot and sweaty!

Blend all of the ingredients until smooth and enjoy (preferably after a great workout)!

Plant Blood - I'm A Vegan Vampire

PLANT BLOOD
This is what I call my fresh green (or red!) juice. I feel like a Vegan Vampire when I'm drinking the blood from plants - mwe hee ha haa haha (that laugh is supposed to sound chilling and scary, although coming from me, yeah, whatever).

Today's Plant Blood:
water

3 bunches parsley
4 green apples
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

GGRRRR!!!!! So, now I'm ready to take on the world with Plant Blood coursing through my veins! And, how could I not? My Plant Blood was loaded with parsley, which is filling me with phenomenal nutrition. It's a powerful detoxifier (and deodorizer - nice!), with plenty of chlorophyll. But that's not all...parsley contains vitamin C, iron, and many other minerals. And...that's REALLY not all - According to Jonny Bowden, PhD., C.N.S., the Romans used to chew on parsley sprigs because it would allow them to drink more wine without becoming drunk. Wow. Hhhmmm, I'll report back to you after I find out if that works.

On a side note...YAY for the Pistons! They are my former home team and I (always!) root for them. Maybe they're consuming extra parsley too, because they're rockin' the house!

Get Your Heart Rate Up And Lose Weight With This!

When it comes to fitness, I'm the kind of gal who typically likes to just get into the gym and do my thing. I lift weights (pretty heavy) and I do my fair share of cardio to get a nice sweat going. I like to change it up though. As with food, variety is a key ingredient to staying motivated with exercise. I mean...who are we kidding? There are usually other things people would rather be doing than exercising - that is until NOW!

Here is one of my favorite ways to exercise while having FUN at the same time. Exercise-Fun? Oxymoron some of you are saying??? I think not! This is the perfect activity for all of you who regard exercise as a 4-letter word (you know who you are). It's rebounding! This is one of my all-time favorite ways to get my lymph circulating, heart rate up and have FUN at the same time! Seriously.

Having a rebounder in your living room by the TV is a great way to get more exercise into your life without ever having to step foot in a gym if you don't want to. It doesn't matter what level of exercise you're used to (or not used to, I should say - haha).

The proof is in the pudding...It even worked on my mom! She was one of those people who hated exercise (4-letter word is what she'd say to me in response when I would tell her she needs to do it more). True story here - She went to meet her husband at the gym to work out, but she didn't feel like exercising because she hated it. So, here is what she did. She arrived at the gym a few minutes early, went to the water fountain and splashed water on her face. Then, when her husband arrived to work out, she said, "WHEW! I've been here for a while now, just had a great work out, sweatin' my butt off, as you can tell. Well, I'm heading home now."

So, you see...she has always hated exercise until now. Ever since she started jumping on her rebounder, she's HOOKED! She loves it. It's helping her lose weight, giving her confidence, and making her feel better than ever.

Here is what she does: Every day while she's making her juice, she sets her kitchen timer in 15-minute increments. Every time it goes off during her time in the kitchen juicing, she jumps on her rebounder for 5-minutes (that's all it takes to start getting a good workout). She'll do this a few times a day and before you know it, she's had some great physical activity to take her health to a whole new level. It's quick, fun, and effective. Personally, I like to keep mine in front of the TV so I can jump on it during commercials.

A High-Raw Soiree: Friends, Food & Fun (LOTS!)

This past weekend I enjoyed a super fun get together with friends, that I'm describing as a High-Raw Soiree. Here is what I brought as my dishes to pass (Raw, Vegan & Organic):

~Creamy Guacamole
~Super Salsa
~Crispy Sprouted Chips (to dip in the aforementioned items)
~Chinese Hemp Noodles (one of the best dishes to take to pass at a party)
~Sweet Dreams Hemp Cookies
~Summer Fresh Lemon Cheesecake (a total hit! I can't wait to share the recipe in my next class)

We did a little celebrating of Cinco de Mayo - complete with margaritas (not all Raw, but made with Raw agave, fresh lime and some other, shall I say, spirited ingredients). The hosts of the party had a delicious kale salad alongside some lovely steamed green beans for us. It was loads of fun...especially when we were singing along to Earth, Wind and Fire at the top of our lungs (many margaritas later).

The Greatest Salad In The World

Truthfully...it's hard to have only one salad in the top spot, so I'm claiming that this salad has earned the right to be in the top 5 at least. It's refreshing, gourmet, stylin' and everyone will want seconds and thirds because the chewy, crunchy, savory and sweet will have you begging for more.

Spring and Summer are popular seasons for enjoying salads. This one is perfect for any occasion, whether you want to:

~ Make yourself a gorgeous salad. (It can be a "starter" for your meal or the whole meal itself.)
~ Serve it to your family. (Get many "oohs and ahhs" while you're at it.)
~ Show it off to friends. (This salad gives you total bragging rights! It'll make you very popular.)


I served this for the salad course at my last Mandala Dinner event, and probably received the same number of emails requesting this recipe as I did for the Spinach Thyme Soup Recipe (available in May's email newsletter - sign up here).

Making the Salad: There are few components you'll need to make in advance, so plan accordingly. I'm known for bragging that my ebooks and recipes are EASY and FAST! Even though this recipe involves a little more work than the typical chopping found in a salad, the work is acceptable for two reasons...1) the salad is a-freakin'-mazing and 2) the work you do for a couple of the items (seeds and leeks) is for making components to the salad that can be stored for future salads; hence, the second, third and maybe fourth time you make the salad, you'll only toss together the dressing and leafy greens.

You'll need the following for each small serving of salad:
2 cups spring mix lettuce
1 tablespoon dried cranberries
1 tablespoon Sweet Vanilla Rain Sunflower Seeds (in my Sides-n-Snacks ebook)*
1 tablespoon Dried Leeks (recipe below)
2-3 tablespoons Olive Vinaigrette Dressing (recipe below)


*You can use any sweetened raw, sprouted and dehydrated seeds, but this simple recipe of mine is one of the main components that brings this salad together. (Special flavors!)

Dried Leeks: Slice 2-3 leeks very thinly, rinse well and place in a bowl of water to soak for about 30 minutes. Drain and rinse well. Place the leeks in a shallow bowl with 2 tablespoons olive oil, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan crystal salt. Let these marinate for about 15-minutes. Transfer them to a dehydrator tray (shaking off any excess oil over the bowl beforehand) and dehydrate until crispy - which is approximately 10-15 hours. Note: Make extra dried leeks so you have plenty on hand. Store them in a glass mason jar in your refrigerator for future salads and soups.

Olive Vinaigrette Dressing
Yield 1 1/4 cups

1/2 cup water
1/2 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons raw agave nectar
1 clove garlic
1/4 teaspoon Himalayan crystal salt
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 cup fresh basil
1/2 cup pitted kalamata olives (or any olives of your choice)


Blend all of the ingredients for the dressing except for the basil and olives. Add the basil and olives, and pulse your blender to break them up, but not to blend them completely. This gives the dressing a lovely texture and color. Put your salads together with all of the ingredients above and enjoy!
