My Favorite Makeup, Body & Hair Products

As promised, I'm listing my favorite makeup, body and hair products that I'm currently using. I've chosen these because they're some of the healthiest on the planet. I'm continuously on the hunt for the most environmentally conscious, non-toxic, truly natural and certified organic products (not many companies offer USDA certified organic) for my hair, face and body. I'll be getting pregnant one of these days; therefore, I'm going extra extra clean. I found some amazing options that I'll be using from here on out. The great news: I'm pampered in healthy luxury and I can still get gussied up for my boyfriend :)

I did plenty of research to find companies that use the highest quality and safest ingredients. The following list of companies is the result. As part of my research, I checked them out on the Skin Deep database. If you're curious as to how your products stack up, visit here. I also contacted the companies and peppered them with questions, testing their customer service along the way. The experience has been terrific and I highly recommend them all. I'll continue to search for other companies, but I'm definitely satisfied with what I've purchased so far. Bottom line: I'm happy to put their products on my skin.

Hair and Total Face/Body Care

Terressentials: Pretty much everything I use is from this company from shampoo to face and body cleanser to face toner to hand soap (the citrus smells divine!) to deodorant (haven't tried yet, just ordered for those rare occasions that I need it) to intensive shea butter moisturizer. I'm ecstatic about their fragrance-free line because with my future pregnancy I'll need to avoid products with essential oils. Their products are hand-crafted, USDA Certified Organic which means these products are truly 100% Natural. I'm so glad I found them...these products have changed my life! I will be trying their baby line, too, when the time comes. (See below for another great baby option.)

Raw Gaia: Here is a great company that I don't use much of because most of their products have essential oils and my research has told me to stay away from essential oils if pregnant. Even though I'm not pregnant yet, I didn't want to buy something only to have to stop using it once I'm pregnant, besides... I'm very much in love with Terressentials. That said, I still like this company and wanted to showcase them. Raw Gaia has beautiful, living skin care products created from cold-pressed, organic and vegan ingredients, infused with essential oils and floral waters of the finest quality. I do currently use and love their Sun-dried Green Clay Face Pack. After pregnancy, I look forward to trying their other products :)

Makeup

Zosimos Botanicals: When it comes to makeup, I want the healthiest possible. Zosimos Botanicals is one of my favorites. I use their loose powder mineral foundation. And, what's more... they're an environmentally conscious company. They handcraft their own line of natural products in a 100% wind-powered workshop. Cool!

Coastal Classic Creations: My makeup has to be as pure as possible, eco-friendly, cruelty-free, all natural, and non-toxic. Enter: Coastal Creations. This company makes my favorite blush (Stargazer), eye shadows (I use these for liner and shadow), and lipsticks (these are the BEST). Try their sample sizes to experiment with colors first.

Baby Soap
Nature's Paradise: This company makes one of the best
USDA certified organic shampoo/soap options for babies. They offer products for the whole family, too. I've only tried the baby shampoo, but many of their other products look promising.

Wow, that's a lot of research! Thanks for this! I will keep those products in mind. I unfortunately still use a bit of commercial products, but looking to weed them out and have only organic, natural ones. Another thing I do is use a water filter for my shower.

Wow great information. I started using an organic face wash and a lotion from Kiss My Face a few months ago and my skin has never been better. Maybe I'll check these ones out once I need more.

Hi Judy,
Be sure and check out this article about some products we think are natural and organic, but they actually have potentially harmful things in them. Kiss My Face is on the list :(

Tim VanOrden from "Running Raw" interviewed Carl Lewis and he said he was a vegan for two years, he now eats chicken and fish.

Kristen's Raw said...

hhhmmm... Interesting. That's too bad. I just read that in a magazine.

Upon further research, according to Wikipedia, "Lewis credits his outstanding 1991 results in part to the vegan diet he adopted in 1990."

Maybe the magazine I read didn't know he added animal flesh to his diet. Oh well, at least he credits outstanding athletic performance to it :)

The interview is on you tube(Will Rodgers 5Kand Carl Lewis interview), it is a little hard to hear. Tim VanOrden has a fun website that chronicles his "Running Raw journey.

Very cool. Thanks. I'm a fan of Tim's :)

Kristin, thanks so much for all this information! I'm also in the process of switching over to healthier products, and this helps a lot. If you don't already know about the FDA Globalization Act of 2008, you might want to read about it here because it could affect our ability to purchase the items you've researched: http://www.indiebusinessblog.com/indie_business/2008/06/stop-the-fda-gl.html

Adore this post! Ironically, I'm looking for an undereye serum. I tend to use Ecco Bella for cleansing, exfoliating and moisture, yet I'm always open to finding the best products for my skin possible. Thanks for sharing!

Kristen's Raw said...

Hi Isle Dance,
For under eye, I use any of the following:

1) Terressentials moisture cream (fragrance-free) at night
2) coconut oil (at night)
3) melted cacao butter (at night)

Thanks Paula,

Every time I see your comments and your "gypsy soul" username, I start singing that old rock and roll song by Cindarella in my head - haha - something like... "Gypsy road...take you (or is it me?) home... blah blah blah"

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the link :)

I've used some of the products you are using now. What my husband and I have used for many years as our soap in the shower and hand soap around the house is Dr. Bronner's Pure Castille soap. I have used it on my son from when he was an infant and I wash my son's hair with this, too.

It's a concentrate so you dilute it with water (so it's very economical) and there are so many different ones - even a hemp one. I used to use the baby one with no scent on him for a few years then we switched to all of us using the almond one for a bit extra moisture since we live in a dry climate. It also ranks as a zero on the Skin Deep website so it's the safest of all. I really love this company and this product especially for kids.

Kristin, I can't say that I know even one of Cinderella's songs, except that "gypsy road" does sound a little familiar, but my use of "gypsy soul" does come from a song. It's "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison. :-)

Hi Michelle J,
WORD is right :)

Hi Nature Deva,
I use Dr. Bronner's for many things such as laundry, cleaning, etc. Sometimes we use it in the shower, too. My boyfriend uses the baby/unscented to wash his hair.

When I was doing research on Dr. Bronner's, it came up as a "1" on Skin Deep, that's why I kept looking for something for future baby that was hopefully a zero. Maybe they've updated it since you last researched. This is why I ended up going for Nature's Paradise for baby 2-in-1 shampoo/soap, it's a zero.

Either way, I love Terressentials, Dr. Bronner's and the others I mentioned. They are all fine :) Sometimes I have to stop myself from splitting hairs, ya know? haha

There is a website www.saffronrouge.com which has bath & beauty products. The owner researches everything & is very selective about what she will allow to be sold on her site. This does have some pricey lines (Dr Haushka, etc), but they have some great stuff. They also send samples of different products you may want to try with your orders. I have been very pleased with everything I've ever ordered from there. BUT, I think I'll be trying Terressentials for my next beauty buys!

Kristen's Raw said...

Hi Anonymous,
I'm also a fan of Saffron Rouge. They have great customer service.

I didn't list them because I'm not using anything of theirs currently. Some of the companies they offered still had numbers higher on the Skin Deep website compared to the companies I mentioned on my blog. Nonetheless, I think they offer some good options :)

Cheers!

Kristen, what kind of toothpaste do you use? I've tried several "natural" brands, and have yet to find one that I think is really, really great. Thanks for such a terrific inspirational blog!

Kristen's Raw said...

TOOTHPASTE I USE:

Well, there are few things I do (not in the same day, I just switch it around from time to time). The majority of days are either #1 or #2 below:

1) Baking Soda
2) Dr. Bronner's Peppermint liquid soap (a little weird at first but you get used to it)
3) Sometimes I use a normal "natural" toothpaste or toothpowder that is minty from the health food store (with minimal chemicals) on those occasions I've eaten lots of garlic (ya know? haha). I'm disapponted in most of those though because they usually contain something that I'm not excited about putting in my mouth.

Bev said...

I have tried Terressentials! . I loved the facial and body products but the shampoos were different story. Did you have ant trouble with them?

Kristen's Raw said...

Hi Bev,
The shampoo (mud) is doing its job. It's detoxing my dry, chemically treated hair and I knew in advance it'd be doing this. I was prepared for it to be an interesting transition as my natural chocolate brown hair grows out.

So, my response for how I like the mud currently is that I'm happy with it. I'm excited about not putting any chemicals on my hair because the mud doesn't have any. The hardest part is combing out my hair after the shower (because I have naturally curly - and long - hair). So, I've done a few of things:

1) Chopped my hair - this needed to be done because I'm eager to rid myself of the dry blond mess I created
2) Sometimes I use a vinegar/water rinse to help condition it
3) I don't always comb it after the shower (with natural wavy hair I can get away with this)

Now, when my hair is all grown out (and longer) I don't know how I'll respond to the mud, but I sure hope I like it because I love the idea of not having any chemicals or plastics on my hair.

Cheers,
Kristen

Thank you for the information. I too have curly hair and it is chemically treated. I love the thing that has no chemicals in it too. I try to detox for two week and I even talk to the owner. My hair was like straw.. I know it's probably in bad condition but it doesn't look it when I use ( Pureology ) It is a vegan product. i noticed your hair and thought it was chemically treated but pretty. My hair has some gray and I don't know if I'm ready to give in to the gray. I've been using the mud to shower with. Thanks for the information
and good luck with growing yours out natural.

Hi Kristin, I just ordered my Zosimos Botanicals . I ordered the minerals and was wondering how you use it ,with a brush or sponge ? What color do you use ? How is your hair doing with the mud ? Also How do you use the mineral shadows ?

Kristen's Raw said...

Hi!

I use a brush for the mineral powder. I mix 2 colors, don't have them in front of me right now to let you know which ones they are.

The mud is great. As my hair grows out and the natural hair is filling out, it's super soft and clean and I'm toxic free! Yay!

The shadows... I use a brush.

Cheers!

Bev said...

When you go to the salon to get your hair cut do you let them shampoo your hair with there products ?

Kristen's Raw said...

Hi Bev,

Honestly, I've been cutting my own hair lately (or my husband has helped). But, if/when I do go to a salon in the future, I'll just bring my own products. :)

Great question!

I always love to read about these types of articles.. I love to know more and more about make up and such since I am taking art class and about to go to make up artist school. It is quite intriguing to know about different techniques that different bloggers value. Beauty is a necessity in this world, and fashion is a statement. I try my hardest to make this world a more beautiful place, and maybe I can push to make the extra missing percentages beautiful as well!
