Pregnancy Prep: Remove Amalgam Fillings...Check!

On Monday I had my amalgam fillings removed because the mercury that amalgam fillings release can be a dangerous toxin for a fetus. Moreover, dental amalgams are a source of mercury that can be found in breast milk. Yikes! I'm not taking any chances... so, out they went.

Now, I really like my dentist, and going to the dentist (in general) has never been my favorite thing to do. You know how public speaking is the number one fear for most people? Well, that's a piece of cake (Raw Vegan) for me. Going to the dentist...well, that's another story. As a result, even though I'm confident in my dentist's abilities and modern equipment, I'm now taking extra precautions and kicking up my detox a bit
post-amalgam-removal with loads of vitamin C rich Raw Vegan foods and and Heavy Metal Nano-Detox.

Hey Kristin, I love your blog! But I need some advice...

I am a vegan, (and I eat about 75% raw) and I am going to India this summer for 3 weeks witha group from school.

I am going to try to eat the fruit there... if it is safe. maybe mangoes and bananas, but I'm concerened about vegetables.

I am planning on bringing a lot of raw food bars, some nuts, a green powder ( i'm looking into vitamineral green but i have yet to try it) and I'm also looking into the ultimate meal. Would this be good to have??

I wouldnt be able to mix it with banana or apple though..

Any travel advice would help me immensely.. and product ideas.. thank you so much!

Hi Lauren,
If you have fresh produce overseas, I'd stick to things you can peel.

Don't be afraid to relax with the level of raw that you are when traveling. I'd rather be safe than sorry... if it means eating more cooked vegan food, so be it. Your smart to bring your green powder with you. The Ultimate Meal wouldn't taste that great with just water, so be sure and try it like that before you go carrying it with you overseas. Make sure you are allowed to bring these foods.

My best advice is to relax and have fun. Drink your green powder once or twice a day, keep your diet vegan and if you can bring some snacks then great, but check to make sure you can bring foods or nuts. Sometimes they allow things that "packaged" but do your research before you go.

Cheers!

Thanks Kristin. I know I'm going to be more cooked vegan there, but I am even concerned about that. Since I am traveling with a group, most of our meals are arranged. They know I am vegan, but I know they use Ghee in almost everything, and they use a lot of paneer. If I am in situtation where I thikn there is Ghee or paneer I will just not eat.. so I'd like to know some of your tried and true products that you would recommend. I'm thinking about getting bars (and why not have them be raw- with some of the added green powders in them) and I was trying to think of a way to get dedhydrated veggies. ( I dont have a dehydrator, and kale chips would be awesome) I'm also worried about the plane ride. I'll probably have a huge green smoothie and salad before my flight, but I will be 'traveling' for over 24 hours. I don't like to eat a lot of things heavy in fats, so eating 1,000 calories in nuts would not be ideal. hmmmm...

Thanks for your previous reply!

you should post a list of all the online stores you use and recommend for buying truly natural organic products from. that would be super helpful

On my website at www.KristensRaw.com/store I have a list of my favorite products and companies...the things I personally use in my own home. Additionally, I link to places you can purchase things through my blog so it's easy to find :) Thanks for the comment!

Hi Lauren,
I see...well, provided you can bring foods, you might check out www.goraw.com (they sell these in Whole Foods as well) for flax crackers and soaked/dehydrated seeds. These soaked/dehydrated goodies would be better for digestion and the flax crackers are lower in fat than a bunch of nuts. Have you tried them?

Let's see...for the plane ride, pack fresh fruit like cucumbers and apples that you can eat and they aren't fragile. If you pack produce (and provided they let you on the plane with this as carry on, then you can eat it which will lighten your luggage load.

There are loads of treats and other foods...you might take a look at www.NaturalZing.com. I can't remember what they're called, but these nori type roll things are there with different flavors. They're dehydrated. Check that website out for ideas :)

So fantastic the things you are doing for pregnancy prep, it's really great that you are so conscious of all the intricacies that I think we often don't give any thought to.

Now, for amalgam fillings...i'm somewhat of a metal mouth in that department and I'm getting more and more nervous about it. I've had most for many years and one had to be replaced with the white filling material recently bc the amalgam was wearing down (SCARY?! releasing little metal nasties into my system!).

I am interested in getting the rest replaced even though I feel the same way about the dentist as you do. Did you only have a couple to do or did you have a few that needed to be done in different visits? I'm thinking that alone might be a 2 year ordeal, just do one side on bottom and then wait 6 months and do other side on bottom and so on.

Will tee at least one more up at my next dental visit in August.

hugs

Hi Kristen,

I have been thinking about changing all my mercury fillings also and my dentist thinks I am a crazy woman. I have heard over and over that the mercury in my silver fillings are very, very bad. Once you have them changed you can feel a HUGE difference. Did you have them done ALL at once??? or did you do them a couple at a time?? My dentist says that the white replacement fillings will not last as long and will not hold up as well. He does not recommend me chanding ANY of my fillings. I have been thinking about doing this for awhile.

Thanks for any help you could give me in your experience with this.

Respectfully,
Sam Cook

Hi LolaBloom,
I was eager to get all four out because of my pregnancy planning.

What I've learned is that you need a strong immune system (got that, check!) and a supportive dentist. Make sure they have technology to support safe extractions. You can learn a lot from simply googling "remove amalgams" to learn various techniques.

I'm not sure if you should space them out or not, but ask your dentist AND *do your own research for that, too* :)

I also learned to up my intake of Vitamin C (before and after) and I'm excited about the Nano Detox supplement I'm taking. Check that out :)

Hi Samantha,
Well, your dentists shouldn't think "crazy" about you with respect to anything. It might be a sign to find a more supportive dentist, because if you choose to do this, it could be that your dentist doesn't have the proper equipment for extraction.

I had all four done at once. My dentist told me the white replacement fillings he uses can last for many many many many many years :)

I can't say whether I feel any different, but who knows, I have been feeling great the past couple of days (outside a couple small headaches which could have been a result of going to the dentist). But, I'm also taking extra special care of myself for pregnancy planning and that could contribute to my feeling good.

Again, I'm going to be breastfeeding and getting pregnant. The consensus is to remove them if this is the case. I was more than happy to do it since I'd been contemplating it for years anyway. If you're not in the same boat as I am, then maybe you want to research it more and then make a decision.

Cheers!

My dentist said that it could be more hazardous to remove them because of the fumes during removal. I need to research this more because I really want to get this done. I wonder if what he says on that is correct or if it depends on the methods they use. Thanks for the encouragement!
